I never understood why no one never thought of using gravity as an advantage instead of gravity being a problem.
Make the upper half of the spherical demon core fixed.
And make the lower half adjustable by means of the lower half being on a platform that allows the lower half to precisely be swiveld and tilted on demand and be lowered and raised towards the fixed stationary upper half of the spherical demon core by use of a worm gear.
Use the proper trapezium toothing and if i remember correctly use helical gears for slack free movement.
And a safety mechanism that when a lever is pushed, the whole platform falls down in an instant, stopping any nuclear reaction exaggerated by proximity between the two halfs of the demon core.
