It looks so cheesy now, but I remember as a kid that scene messed me up something fierce. I still freak out when something gives way if I'm not expecting it.

It does NOT look cheesy.

It looks a hell of a lot more realistic and frightening than the CGI that is wildly over-used nowadays, including in the prequel to The Thing from a couple of years ago.

I don't hate CGI with a rabid passion. CGI is a very important tool and there are some FX which make much more sense to achieve using CGI than other methods.

Without CGI the Lord of the Rings films wouldn't have been what they were... CGI was used in a very appropriate amount in those films. They used it TOO MUCH in the Hobbit, however.

I don't object to some CGI in the 2011 Thing prequel, but they used it far too much. There were a lot of scenes of the creatures where they looked really fake... so it's not just an issue of too much CGI, it's also an issue of bad CGI.

I wish more of Hollywood would have a greater recognition for the continued importance of physical effects, there are still situations that they make more sense to use.

I think it could also be a mongoose, especially with how fast it moved just as it was about to be run over. Remember, that was in slow motion and mongooses routinely dodge and counter snake strikes.
