I'm surprised Snopes says "the reading / sophistication level is not 4th grade." I also attended a private Christian school and they taught the same kind of stuff. I was probably in 4th grade around '89, '90, '91 (there's a reason I'm not sure about the specific year). When it comes to reading and writing, my classmates and I were reading on a much more advanced level in 4th grade than our counterparts in public school. We had been required to write in cursive since 1st or 2nd grade.

Standards were always different between public and private schools; and both have declined rapidly.

Even back when I was in school, it was obvious that educational standards had been declining for decades. A higher percentage of the population was "educated" than ever before, but the quality of the education had steadily worsened (and still continues to worsen).
