Actually, they are much more suitable for gaming than other notebooks in their class.
For example, the MacBook Air is even smaller than my Alienware M11x r3, and yet the Broadwell 12" model will blow it away when it launches early next year. Sure, it can't play everything, but it'll play most of my Steam library. Typical gamer wants Call of Duty and even a MacBook will easily outclass the consoles (especially the MacBook Pro). Did you forget that they support Windows through BootCamp to play all the Windows-only games?
"Typical gamer" these days on a computer is playing WoW or LoL. I'm pretty sure both are available for Mac.
