I didn't know about the open door. My guess is that once the wall came down, the folks in Constantinople knew the game was over and just tapped out.

and because there was a legend born
that the byzantine empire will be reborn and they will take back the city from the same door the turks took it
the turks have destroyed the door and made it a wall
so you see no door no possible for the legend to be true any more
but the christians replied by saying the wall will be magical (an angel of the lord will break it) break where the door was and make an opening and the troops will recapture the city from the same spot lol
you do realize that there was not one wall but 2 or 3 lines of walls??? depending the area.
and the inner walls were getting taller and weighter

the people in Constantinople were so stupid and all become monks so they do not have to do army duty there were 500.000 monks inside the city while the turks were 220.000 strong
the last defenders were 6000 viking for hire mercenaries thats manned the walls
