Movies always hide the recoil aspect of firing a gun. It's not a surprise that people buy guns thinking that there is no recoil involved.
well, it doesnt help that some rifles, like AR's, have buffers that do reduce it a fair amount. That creates unrealistic expectations.

Still a really strange way to try and fire a rifle. Not what one would instinctively do, given all the movies everyone must have seen showing people firing them in the more conventional manner.
Was going to let it pass, this being the picture thread and everything, but now you bring it up again, I did have the passing thought that maybe the shooter there was literally mentally disabled and someone put him up to it as a really mean 'prank', which would be a downright abusive thing to do. Hopefully they were just a common-or-garden dimwit, messing about.

Yeah I suspect some acting there.

Looks like a Browning 30, which IIRC means the burliest caliber it might have is .30-06. .30-06 recoil varies like all the rest depending on weight of projectile, but it's typically less than 20 lbs. A grown man should be able to handle that even with a comically absurd hold on a rifle. Now if he did that with a dangerous game load, big medium bore Winchester or a Weatherby, yeah that might hurt you.
