I'm not a big fan of the bald eagle. Glorified vultures. They're impressively big, but that's about it. I'd prefer the redtail hawk as the national bird.

This is what an apex predator looks like!

pfft. Baldies are mostly scavengers. They also sound like wusses with their broken screeches (popular culture only really knows the sound of a Red Tail Hawk, which is often used to replace that of a Bald Eagle, because Baldies sound so revolting and not at all "honorable." A Blue Jay is more terrifying than a Baldie)

Here's the actual most perfectly realized killing machine anywhere:

yeah but when you think about, they are kind of perfect for our national symbol: All fluff, no substance.

I like Bald eagles despite their "not top apex predator" role. The sounds the parents make when their kids fly for the first time is like a celebration. They can live for over 70 years too, so there is an advantage of being a bit wussy. Eagles biggest advantage is the effortless soaring. And they yawn when bored, which makes me think they have something going on in their heads. I can also have some empathy for not wanting to haul your huge ass body over the ocean waves and catch a fish when any misjudgement of the weight of the fish, wind gust, or splash of the waves can drag you in and drown you. I find many dead eagle remains washed up on the shore. I'd eat a roadkilled deer any day over that too.

Reminded me of this video. I love NatGeo.

It's pretty cool how certain animals are innately OK with people. I love that these massive salt water death otters seem to fall into that category, those camera guys sure love it. Pretty sure I've seen that special before, I want to say in another part of it that big female was shooing away other inquisitive leopard seals who wanted to say hi and play? Very cool. Takes stones to get in the water down there at all, let alone with teeth like that swimming around with you. I'd go through my air so fast, constantly on the look out, wary of that possibility which could lack the pleasant chill and Italian grandma routine of the others.

The one that's more of the sociopath outcast of the community. The one who might suspect I'm just a big, slow penguin, wants to 'explore that concept.'

The carrion thing irks me a little. Bears, wolves and wolverines do it but it doesn't seem to affect their clout at all. If picky eating makes for a good symbol we should have gone osprey.

I've always felt it should be Harris hawks, after our long experience of showing up out of the blue and killing stuff as a team.

We definitely fail at the 'cooperative nesting' part though, hopefully not much longer.
