Scuba here. Can empathize. As a teen I tried to use a little boogie board in Oman once, during a monsoon. Gigantic mistake, made it out alive by the skin of my teeth. That concluded my interest in surfing that didn't involve a sail.

Probably my favorite place in the ME. More mountains than desert, and the Ibadi are less uptight than Sunni and Shia. I was really surprised by how green everything was down in the south. Diving is better than inside the Gulf, but it's no Maldives. Plenty of mangoes and shwarma to be had, so I recommend it.
