JH-Nvidia: Volta not coming soon.. and may be "expensive"

If it's not released this year, it'll be Q1 of next year. Nvidia doesn't march to the beat of AMD anymore; they release products when the products are ready and not as a response to AMD. If Volta production costs are sky high to the point where it isn't better perf/$, then it would simply exist along side Pascal until the point where manufacturing costs make sense to discontinue Pascal. Nvidia has created a market for $700+ GPU's and they won't shy away from it now if there is an opportunity to get sales.

TSMC will start mass production of their 12nm node in Q4 this year. Being big chips I would not expect them to release Volta before Q1 of 2018.

Im expecting end of Q1 beginning of Q2. With availability here in canada to be next summer, we are always getting stock 2-3 months behind the USA launches. Im going to ride it out on my RX 480 till then and then look at a 2060/2070. Unless Vega 56 is priced really really well and they fix whatever is murdering the performance when using AA.

I wouldn't be shocked if Nvidia released a 14nm fabbed GP104 and GP102 based respin of the 1070 and 1080 parts in time for Christmas. Perhaps both with a slightly higher bin of GDDR5(x) for additional speed. It wouldn't be overly difficult for them to do, would net them more chips per wafer, a good 10-15% more performance, and likely would also reduce power consumption for miners, making their cards even more attractive. Both parts would effectively be well clear of VEGA 56 and 64 performance for likely much less cost to fabricate. They could both easily have an MSRP of $100+ over the existing 1070 and 1080.

I guess for NV, obviously the far easier business model is to slow things down. The rapid pace of GPU tech is imo almost entirely competitive based. When one of the actors slows down, why spend more to 'over-compete'? Far easier and economical to just continue with your existing product line and take your time. Time not necessarily wasted, but used towards an even better product than one released on schedules or fast product cycles. Would love to see GPUs released in the sort of leisurely pace of consoles.

Feb-May for first gaming chips, like the previous 3 archs have been. GTX 980 was late, but 750 Ti still made that time frame and was the first Maxwell.

The only reason to be later than H1 2018 would be self-imposed delay because they feel Pascal can still move cards and mining is inflating prices anyway. Then they could wait.

You don't have to play the newest games maxed out. Newsflash: you can be in the console cycle and still play every PC game out there at acceptable framerates and higher than minimum settings. Radeon 290X is older than the PS4 and handles High settings very well still. Same with the nearly 6 years old 7970 if you are more liberal in dropping a setting or two. Don't stop this progress train and make GPUs like Intel Core series.

I'm aiming for this. Will most likely get a 2070 then sell it for the 2080ti. Hoping by then there will be viable 4k gsync monitors that aren't pitiful small.

The only people who will say to wait have never held a job where their salary and bonus is dependent on company execution.

So the TLDR here is that there will not be any new cards for 6-8 months, so what we see from both AMD and NVIDIA is all we will get. If Vega manages to start taking share from NVIDIA (mainly the Vega 56 due to its value proposition, especially when overclocked), do you suppose we will see a rebrand with slightly higher clock speeds and a lower price? Or would it be better for NVIDIA to suck it up until Volta? Biggest factor for me is how many Vegas AMD can make. If no gamers can get Vega, or if they can but miners drive the price into an area that makes it less enticing than Pascal, is NVIDIA really losing much? AMD can have the best card (they do not) but if they can not make enough to make a dent why should NVIDIA care?

This is the main reason i wanted vega to succeed so badly, freesync. I have yet to hop on the G/free/sync bandwagon and was waiting for vega to launch and new GPU purchase before getting a new monitor dedicated for gaming. I had already looked at a bunch of monitors to start pricing one out but it appears that freesync is for sure getting more and better monitors than G-sync. Which is completely ludicrous considering the Gsync tax..... Oh how i wish g-sync had the monitor selection that freesync has. Hopefully bu next year the selection of gsync monitors will catch up to freesync.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (Core 2048, from the notebooks) 9 Gbps. This late in life cycle? Probably no. Might be a collector's item if released.
