This is exactly why my wife and I capped set a wedding budget of $12-15k. Enough to have a really nice party, but not enough to encourage a lawsuit in the event things did not work out.

Wow, the budget my wife and I set was something like $1,500

We rented a beach house for the weekend, and got married at sunset on the beach. The beach house cost something like $750, and that was the largest expense. Everything else was food, cake,,,, stuff like that.

If he has to pay even half it still sounds like a bargain to get away from this chick and avoid a more costly mistake down the road where he's sending her monthly alimony.

Initially, I thought the same thing and that she doesn't deserve a dime...

but if the guy was just stringing her along telling her he could trust her even though he was already telling his friends the wedding wasn't going to happen while she was making the arrangements (near the end of the article), that is a different story...

Burden of proof is on her.

Much cheaper than divorcing her later.

This. Even having to pay her the $100,000 back... he's still better off, IMO.

Assuming he even has that kind of money. Usually money marries money though, so I bet he can pay it if he has to. I hope he at least got to nail her a few times.

Her engagement was in a contract?

She spent her own money on her own wedding... He probably said "Lets just go to Vegas" but the woman probably wanted her fairy tale wedding and paid for it. It was a gamble she took, it was her money, her choices, and her loss.

I hope it goes to Jury.

haha, you'd have to be an idiot to spend that much on a wedding. Sounds like this guy made the right move to bail when he did.

We only spent about $10K (Of which her parents paid 4K, we paid 4K, and my parents paid 2K) on our wedding and even that made me flinch a little.

There will likely be some retribution but it also depends what a judge finds to be reasonable expenses. If some one verbally offered me a job, and I went out and baught a 20 thousand dollar suite, the hiring company won't be liable for a 20 thousand dollar suite of course. Even if I baught a 30 thousand dollar car after a verbal agreement, the hiring company won't be liable.

My wedding initial expenditure was set at $1,500, but my wife's parents chipped in so the total was about $3000. The wedding was fantastic too; great food, excellent photographer (guy I worked with), great time all around.

I cannot honestly understand someone spending $100,000 on a wedding. That is just flat out ridiculous.

100K for a wedding? Gee

My GF freaked out when I proposed offsetting holidays by two weeks to save money (post holiday sales), hope I do not have one of these to look forward to...

Another Vote for--Dude was all WTF after seeing the Bills.

That kind of Money will put a decent dent into the Purchase of a Home or some other necessary expense that will secure a stable and lasting Marriage. Why the fuck would making a huge hole of Debt be worthwhile to begin such a thing?

Invite the Parents to Vegas, get Married in the Morning, Gamble through the rest of the day. It makes much more Fiscal sense than some elaborate nonsensical "Wedding".

Regardless, it was still her choice. If I say to my GF : "If you come back to me tonight after a long day hard at work, I'm going to buy a new computer, with an SSD, the best video card, and 10 games just for something to play..." Can I sue her if she doesn't come home for loss ($2000) because I already ordered the parts on NewEgg?

Like I said, I hope it goes to jury.

Once again...from the article

According to Buttitta’s lawsuit, she and Salerno began dating in 2004 and got engaged in 2007. The suit claims that Salerno began telling friends the wedding was off long before he admitted it to Buttitta. It also accuses him of “deliberately and maliciously reassuring the plaintiff that he loved her and that she could trust him until the day before the cancellation of the wedding”

We have no idea if she was a bridezilla or not....If she wants to flush $100K down on a wedding, it is her prerogative. If she has the money to pay for it, she should get what she wants...I think it is terrible idea was well, but if she can afford it, why does anyone here even care what she does with her money??

However, if the guy knew she was spending alot of money and kept stringing her along, then he is a douche bag...

Either way, we will probably never get the full details on big of a bitch she was or wasnt or how much of an asshole he was or wasn't...

Why would anyone want to spend that much on a wedding? Use it on the honeymoon instead, or some nice jewelry, or some renovations on the house. Jesus, something that will last more than 1 day!

Who are you to question how she wants to spend HER money...why do people buy $50K cars when they can get a Corolla or Kia? Why buy a $2000 computer when they have laptops for $250? Why spend $100 on steak and lobster dinner when you can order off the Wendy's dollar menu? My guess is personal preference...what is yours???

People can do whatever the hell they want with their money, no matter how stupid you think it is...I thought we lived in a free society where we can what we want (legally) but apparently dipshits here have a problem with people spending their own money....

Looks like she wants a side order of bitterness with her wedding cake.

Bridezilla plans her perfect day and neglects her husband causing him to break up with her? Sounds like her ego was just too big.
This. My guess is she doesn't even like the guy; she just wants to throw a big party. Have you ever seen that show on TV about retarded people getting married on a budget? I think it was something like "till debt do us part" but basically it's a show about two people that seemingly don't get along very well trying to plan a wedding then arguing over every aspect of the wedding. This is bridezilla. Getting married just to say you got married. Then getting divorced just to add to the statistics.

Another Vote for--Dude was all WTF after seeing the Bills.
Yep. While lots of people throw big weddings they can afford, a lot of people also throw big weddings they cannot afford. Even if she's making $200k per year, $100k is still half her yearly pay. Can you imagine spending half of your yearly pay on a wedding? You guys making $40k per year, would you spend $20k on a wedding? Or would you rather buy a car? Or a down payment on a house? Or invest it and retire a couple years earlier?

This is why you should not have a stupid over priced wedding. Just go to a JP and pay the 20 dollar fee + license and be done with it with change left over.
Indeed. My parents had a guest list of about 20 people and it was the kind of gathering you have after a football game. After that they went to Hawaii for 2 weeks.

What are you basing this on? Gut feel? something from the article? I don't think there is enough info there to make a decision one way or the other...

So all weddings should be like your parents???

I don't see this going anywhere as marriage itself is a contract with legal obligations attached. To say that he had a legal obligation to marry her is to basically say that he was married to her as soon as he proposed.
