Cause some dude left something great will be released because it happened before? Sure, it's possible. However, superstitious thinking is not a good way to raise ones hope on.

Errrr no. They CANNOT afford to scrap Jim Keller's design work on Zen. It'd be absurd if they did.

He was there for only a year (1999-2000) I believe. K8 launched in 2003 so I think if he would have had a major hand in K8's design he would have had to been there longer or at least closer to K8's launch. Who knows...

No, but it's perfect forum fodder.. and we're in short supply of that..

Derp, yeah. Saw Dirk on there, got names mixed up.

We also still can't entirely count out Jim Keller's contribution in this case since some of the circuits from the initial K8 design may have made ways and that he is a co-author of the x86 64-bit extension specification too ...

Surely Keller still helped somewhat on Zen?
He probably helped quite a bit since he was the one giving all the interviews. But in regards to this thread he was the project lead of K8 when he left. It's not quite the same with Zen whose project lead is still with AMD and Jim Keller was in a higher, probably more managerial, position with a greater vision over all ongoing projects.

Well that's good then. If Zen ends up performing at Haswell levels, I'm picking up an AM4 socket motherboard and finally building myself my first rig.

But how can this be true, Keller is god himself!

Kellers sudden departure sure isn't putting any points in the positive basket.
Sudden? His job was complete. Anyone that thinks that Zen will now suddenly perform 10 times slower than what it could have been if Keller didn't leave, is lacking something up there.

Citation please.

What we do know is that AMD didn't have a replacement ready.

I dont think Zens performance matter much if Keller was there or not. The R&D budget however got a huge impact on that.

According to this list of computer architects Jim Keller's K8 design was scrapped after he left AMD. What shipped as K8 was actually Fred Webers' design.

http://people.cs.clemson.edu/~mark/architects.html

Could this be true?

Could history be repeating itself with Zen?

I thought your alliance was in consensus on the 'fact' that Keller, or Weber for that matter, is just one out of a zillion ppl working on such a design and therefor their contribution to the whole was negligible in respect to the final product.
Funny how your 'standards' change depending on what view supports your fantasy-schizophrenic interpretation of reality.
Someone should report this 'guy' for trolling. I cant be bothered.

This is what David Kanter and me were saying since all that Keller hype came up multiple times. But try to stop a rolling media/forum train.

But I think Weber was mainly responsible for HTr. He also touted 10 GHz besides other future goals.

Is it me or did anyone else notice that Keller was not listed as author/co-author of the x86-64 spec? I could have sworn I had read at one time, or a few times, that he was credited as such. Maybe I'm off.
