The reason you study and know and talk to you enemy is because your enemy is you. You hate him because you hate yourself and if you fight his as stupidly as you fight yourself you will lose. You have to love your enemy because it's how you love yourself. Everything you hate about him is what you feel is true about yourself. You can't dissolve the illusion till you stop feeding the hate.
Once you can stop violently reacting to the insanity of others you can proceed to rationally stop them from acting out. Once you have them in a position where they can't hurt anybody, you can then work to help them get over their own self hate.
In short you mercilessly and without any compromise whatsoever, stop people from doing harm to others, but you stop immediately if they see the light. You try to bring evil to love and it's only hopeless if you are. Getting even and punishing people is nothing but crap. People who harm others are in an emotional hell greater than anything you can do to them.
Carter is a deep Christian who knows that how you treat the other, the worthless and despised, is how God will judge you because you will be judged and condemned by your own self hate because you and I are the worthless and despised in our deeply buried feelings.
