A cracked ring land will let gases out of the combustion chamber, but if it's a small crack nothing will jam into the cylinder wall and score it.

Ya looks like he got lucky! Those stock rods can hold a ton of power right? I cant remember

weird.

I though for sure you would have broken ring lands and heavily scored #3 cylinder. Those bores look pristine though... ?? What was causing bad compression if not that? Stuck Valve?

So, forged bottom end... potential... potential!!!
A solid bottom end like that should be good to the 500hp range, no?

Why the fuel rail upgrade?

You getting ARP head studs and a steel headgasket?

WI or A2W?

I'm betting it's cyl3 ringland. ARP studs and MLS head gasket, yeah. I should be good to 400whp+ (really depends on how long the block holds together).

Fuel rail upgrade happened because I started selling stuff while I was planning on replacing the motor entirely. However, after selling my old rail and 800's, I was able to upgrade to a top feed rail and 1200's for a difference of $110. Sooo...not complaining.

Other toys on the list - ATS Racing Clutchmasters Stage 4 clutch (500whp capable), Engle valve springs (8000+rpm), possibly a high flow oil pump, timing belt kit, oil seals everywhere, and I am thinking about cams... ~$550 for GSC 268's, or ~$100 for Gen3 cams. I'm not sure if I want to save some money and go with Gen3, or go all out with proper cams and end up making 300+rwhp at ~15psi, and then crank it up from there.

Yeah, the block will fail before the rods let go.

I see evidence of hot gas errosion at the rear (left side in photos) of piston #3 , slightly more toward intake side. The small black pocket of non uniform gap

Drop box expiration time on links seems to keep getting smaller and smaller.

Photo was just a zoom and crop of the left side of the second cylinder from the left in the photos.

Faint black flat spot/gap on the edge of the piston from gaseous erosion giving away the problem hidden underneath. Hard too see, has a tooth decay sort of faintness to it.

Until it expires again

On the way:

Gen3 3SGTE cams
CP piston ring set (x4)
Clutchmasters FX5000 6 puck unsprung clutch kit
Distributor seal kit
ARP head studs
3SGTE engine gasket set
3SGTE timing belt
Cometic MLS head gasket

Progress shall resume soon. The garage is usable now, too:

garage looks tight!

How much heavier is that clutch feel wise?

The Clutchmasters FX400 is supposed to be the same as or lighter than stock, and the FX500 has the same pressure plate (unsprung vs sprung disc), so it shouldn't be bad at all.

Took the cams and distributor out today. The distributor needs a rebuild...can feel the bearings when I rotate it. Fortunately, I already have a rebuild kit. The cam journals look great, but I need some valve work. I sprayed some PB Blaster in the intake valves and some of them leak. So, gotta fix that.

I may tear down the block tomorrow. It has to hit a shop, then I have to fix the valve issue, then it can go back together.

Is it just me or does it seem like a lot of people just don't use Clutchmasters? I put one in my Honda years ago and it was great. I plan on putting one in the WRX when it finally needs it too. Is it a cost issue? What say ye?

They're popular with the MR2 crowd. Spec is has a bad reputation. Exedy is pretty popular as well. I wouldn't think it's a cost issue - they're about the same as ACT. The FX500 was quite inexpensive; much less than I expected.

Yeah - the bore looks surprisingly good. Should be like new after a 0.020 over bore/hone. Forged pistons are taunting me from a shelf...I have to figure out where I'm going for machine work, then I can get it done. It's possible I could be putting the engine back together by the weekend, if I find a shop that's not too busy!

Nice!

I'd cover all the engine bits with paper towels to keep dust off of them and spray some light oil or motor oil on the paper towels to prevent rust.

Oh my, so many naughty bits on display :O

This.
The thread just became a whole lot more interesting.

Its like that one scene in every episode of Game of Thrones where they let the 13y/o direct ... "hmmm, what can make this scene better... I KNOW! BOOBS!"
