This.
The thread just became a whole lot more interesting.

Its like that one scene in every episode of Game of Thrones where they let the 13y/o direct ... "hmmm, what can make this scene better... I KNOW! BOOBS!"

Pod is now one of my favorite characters.

I concur on the covering with towels (I'd use cotton rags) and spraying lightly with oil.

Well, the block is at the shop now - the surface is 3-4 thousandths off so it's getting decked. The head is going to go get cleaned / valve job / etc, so really the only parts left to cover are cams and rods. With Arizona's humidity I think they'll be fine, but I can cover 'em up anyway. I doubt I'll get the head disassembled this week, but I should hopefully be able to start assembling the block this weekend (assuming bearings arrive in time). If not, maybe I can get the head disassembled so I can get that to the shop as well.

I'm going to call out JLee for having his block back and not providing obligatory machine shop pr0n for us.

Water pump and thermostat housing area, most prone to water leaks, pooling, and corrosion combined with being over 20 years old.

Could have had the block blasted but function > form right . You can't see that part from the back of the car anyway :awe:

I'd chalk it up to some coolant spraying out when the car overheated last summer.

OP, I had a sprung 6 puck in my DSM and hated it. I mean, HATED it. It was so chattery anytime I started moving from a stop. Have you driven a car with a 4 or 6 puck in it before? (sorry if you know what to expcet, I haven't read through the whole thread)

I believe JCH's Miata had one - sprung clutches can break springs, and twin discs are super expensive. With an open wastegate / etc the car isn't exactly the smoothest quietest car ever, so I'll deal with it.

yep water pump, hose from hell area...... i dont like it means you had a leak....never good

Eh, doesn't matter at this point. The whole engine is getting resealed, head and block are getting machined and inspected, so any previous issues don't matter.

Aisin (OE manufacturer) water pump is only $42. I'm going to see if I can get a high volume oil pump for less than the $160 that I've seen so far.

I installed the crank into the block and checked clearances with plastigage - most were 0.025mm, one was 0.030-0.033ish (spec allows for 0.038mm). Unfortunately, there's a little score mark on the crank bearing surface on the flywheel side, so I'm going to get the crank polished.

The head is now completely disassembled and will be going to the machine shop this week.

I still need to order Engle valve springs, 1200cc top feed injectors, a piston ring filer, and a Wiseco ring compressor.

If anybody knows anyone interested in a CTS-V, mine is for sale. I'm super broke.

Some guys are putting 5SFE pumps onto their 3SGTE's because they have a higher rate of flow, you could look into that at the OC... I think its Aisin OPT075

The Aisin parts I ordered just had the Toyota scratched off of them. Otherwise, exactly the same part.

The head and crank are at the machine shop now for cleaning/inspection/etc. Once I have them back, assembly can commence!

Pre-assembly needs:
Piston ring file
Assembly lube
Dial indicator (can probably borrow that)
Piston ring compressor (will get the Wiseco sleeve)

Pre-installation needs/wants:
Engle valve springs (8000rpm)
1200cc top feed injectors (have no injectors now)

My dad's still got the dial indicator sitting out for you. Either you can swing by and pick it up or let me know and I can try to remember to pick it up and bring it over.
