Hey so I've been in a sales position for too long and want to do what I went to school for. I've been applying to entry level sales accounting job and have had numerous interviews but no luck getting hired. The feedback I've gotten has been "Great guy would have hired him but he lives too far and we feel the commute will burn him out" and "Excellent personality, I really really really liked him, but he's very passionate about his current job and I feel like he might not like accounting. He's really good at sales I can see it in the way his eyes light up when he was talking about his current job. I feel like after 3 or 4 months because of how structured accounting is he would hate this job. I know all he needs is a break."

So, what would your best advice be for me? I always thought being passionate about my current job and role would be a good thing? How do I answer "why do you want to do accounting now that you're a manager and working your way up your current company?"

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried telling the truth? That your skills aren't being fully utilized?

You may not find this very helpful but I think you need to answer this one for yourself.

What is it you don't like about sales that you would like about accounting?

Beyond that and Sonikku's comment above there isn't much any of us are going to be able to tell you.

If you are doing well in sales why not step over accounting into a higher level job?

What sort of accounting credentials do you have?

Have you considered doing some accounting work on the side, lots of small businesses use somebody that comes by once a week or so and does all the accounting stuff.

You want to move from sales into _accounting_? That's ass-backwards, I don't care what your schooling/training indicates. There are far more opportunities and much larger paychecks to be had in sales. It's also more interesting.

Just speculating, but I'll bet those interviewers are thinking the same thing. You typically don't want to hire someone moving from a better job into a lower one. That's just asking for problems.
