I have a job interview Monday morning for a Facilities Manager position at a library. I will be interviewing with the Director of the library. This will be my first job interview in twenty years and I have no idea what the hell to wear.

Dress shoes are a given but slacks, white shirt and tie? How about slacks and a white dress shirt with no tie? Slacks and casual dress shirt like maybe pullover three button? Also by dress slacks I refer to khakis or should it be suit pants?

Or maybe just show up in my John Belushi toga with a keg slung over my shoulder and get everyone drunk?

It's always better to be overdressed, I have yet to meet someone hiring that gets upset if you overdress (unless they specifically ask you to go casual). Business Casual is a safe bet, which is slacks and a dress shirt, but I personally would go with the tie as well. You can always take it off any time and put it in your pocket if you feel like you are overdressed and you should make a good impression.

Agree 98%

The only time overdress is bad: You clothes is much much nicer than the clothes your future boss is wearing.
One old college friend of mine drive his MB S-class and wear his best suit for an interview of an entry level programmer job. The manager takes him to lunch and saw his ride. You know how it went...

The next time he borrow other people cars to go for interview.
*His family is super rich and that's how he got is S-class

Holy Yuck. Some people have no sense of fashion...

Anyway, to the OP: As a *Manager*, you want to dress formally. You can decide how formal you want, but you should err on the side of formal, rather than informal. Suit? Check. Tie? Check. Nice pressed Shirt? Check. Nice black dress shoes (or brown depending on other things your wearing). Check.

LOL- I did this 10 years ago for a factory job. I showed up in a 3 piece suit with Don Johnson hair, and the guy that did the interview was a supervisor at the plant. He was nervous as hell talking to me ( ), and I ended up getting an unadvertised position as his boss. PWNED!

Agreed, but I would never offer to drive if I knew my car was going to be better than my future bosses. And yes, sometimes a suit is too much, but a shirt/tie is never too much. But you are correct I have heard of one instance where a buddy was told to dress casual and ended up wearing a suit. Turns out they went into the factory (it was a Engineering design job at a fab plant) and everyone else wearing jeans, etc. thought he was a douche. But in general, you can't go wrong with a suit/tie.

I wore a suit to a software company for a developer position A senior developer interviewewd with me and he was in jeans and a polo. A vp interviewed me next and he had a dress shirt on and jeans. So i was definitely overdressed. But it didnt matter since I got the job.

And since its a library I bet they are pretty conservative in their dress.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago- I knew people working there dressed casual but I ended up buying a suit for the interview- I got the job and felt very confident about how I looked and how I presented myself. It's hard to overdress...

I wear whatever I see fit. I will not wear less or drive lesser, adjusting who I am inside, because of you, you, or you. If you feel less of yourself because of me, that's your issue not mine. If that is the reason I did not get the job then I'm glad I didn't have the opportunity to work with you.

Too many people have this unwarranted fear of their superiors for no good reason. As long as I have reason, holding down my own I could care less how the hell you're feeling on any given day. There's no reason to act like a shrimp. Stand up and hold your head up high. Respect is mutual.

A quick rule of thumb went it comes to bussiness dress.

If someone does not want you to wear a tie they will tell you usually and not hold it against you.

If someone thinks you should be wearing a tie and you are not. normally they will say nothing and hold it against you.

For any serious employment, you can't go wrong with a charcoal or navy suit with a conservative tie and a nice pair of balmoral (Oxford) dress shoes.
