I recently accepted a job offer for Farmers insurance as an office claims rep at their call center....and the job starts in 3 weeks. Although it has nothing to do w/ my math major degree, the pay is good, benifets is good, and I think I will do well.

Just yesterday, I got a call from the oklahoma security employment commission asking for a job interview. This job has to do with statistics, so it is closer to my major. The salary is about 7000/year less then the insurance job.

Although I feel happy w/ the insurance job, do I still go interview at the government office for the statistican position? Although the pay is a lot lower, being a "state" job and all, will their be any benifits that can convince me to change my mind?

I'm not sure about your state, but a state job here means a 40 hr workweek and paid vacation for every federal holiday.

do the interview

ignore the fact you already have an offer and go to the interview with an open mind.
find out as much as you can. who knows... you might like it better.

job happyness > $7000

A state job will have more benefits, and opportunities to get other jobs within the state. I would definitly take a close look at all of the pros and cons of each job.

Take the interview, and good luck! If it goes well, State Farm can find another call center rep.

PENSION!!!

If you work there for over 20 years, I don't know if it applies in every state, you can get 60% of your final salary every year after you retire. If you end up making $100k, that's $60k for sitting at home!

right now, this is what I know about the insurance that I will work for:

31,000 per year(approx 2,6xx per month)
full health/vision benifits
38.5 hours work week
flex schedule(meaning I can take longer lunch and come in late if I want to)
tution reinbursements
weekends and holidays off

with the govt job,
all I know is that it is 19,xx per month, so the salary difference is actually around 700 dollars less per year.

I think I will go interview and see, but what do I say if they ask about when I can start? Do I tell them right away I already have a job lined up? Is it pointless to ask them to up my salary to match it if they like me? on the govt website, they had pretty specific salary, so they wont change it right?
