I just got a job offer for 65k annually, which is 20k more than I make now. The only thing I am not exactly sure what I would be doing there tech-wise. I really love what I am doing at my present job and enjoy the people I work with. Any advice? I would have to move 2 hours away for this job also with no relocation expense. Cost of living is the same. I rent and am single so it's no big deal.

Hell yes I would take it. There's probably not a chance that your current job will just up and give you a 20k raise. While you may like your current job and coworkers, who's to say you won't at the new company? Plus it may be that you would learn a new technology or skill that you wouldn't at your current job. It may help to ask the new company just exactly what you'll be doing.

Exactly, none of these questions matter. Why is there any doubt in your mind. DO IT.

how did you get this offer (were you looking for jobs/interviewed with this company)? Any chance your present company will counter-offer?

Yes these questions matter. What if the location is a place that will cost more to live, nullifying the extra 20k/year he's getting. What if to make that extra 20k/year he's working 60+ hours/week with no overtime pay and the job is more stressful?

I will post an update when I get more information. I do not have enough info. A friend let me know about this job btw.

How often will you feel like driving back 2 hours to see your friends and family?

If the cost of living is the same then there is likely a similar company in your current area willing to pay you a similar wage for similar work. Find THAT job instead.

But if you don't have much tying you to your current area then move and take it. Or at least tell your work you have another offer and ask them to match it. Maybe you can get a few grand more out of them if you really do want to stay in your current position.

you could tell your current job. they might match it.

at my company which is involved in software engineering (apparently there is a huge shortage of these right now? , i haave no idea, we have to fly qualified people in most of the time) we end up matching things like 30% raises etc + additional 10% on top of that.

so it probably wont hurt to ask. i havent even started looking outside, but i already asked for a raise and was awarded additional options. supposed to be getting the raise starting next year.

asking gets you stuff, it works.
