Job offer

I have wanting to move to Virginia for awhile now. I like the area and I want to be closer to my mother.

I was offered a job yesterday for a very reputable internet software developer. I would be on the support team (not developing). Everything sounds great except for the fact that I would be making $5k less than what I am now. It could be my foot in the door to VA, but I am a little unsure. They said that I could fly down and shadow or a day or two to see how I like it.

What do you guys think? Have you been in a similar situation?

What's cost of living like in comparison? If it costs less to live there a $5k hit won't be much...

So far, from what I've seen it's less in VA. I'm sure I'd have to live a little tighter, which probably would be fine until I could get a job where I really would like to work.

Heh, I'd think not spending another winter in Maine would be worth the 5 grand.

depends where in va... if your living in nova (near dc) be prepared to pay alot of money.

the pay is $5k less than in Maine? that is absurd, cost of living adjustment should be +$5k at the very least. I would suggest keep looking...

If they really want you for a software dev position, I'd imagine they should be able to at LEAST match your previous salary. You need to talk with them.

It's not a dev position, it's support. It's in Lynchburg.

ah, lynchburg.... it's actually pretty cheap to live there. however, not close to big universities with coeds that put out.

I noticed it's a bit cheaper there. I found a really nice apartment that is ~$150 cheaper than what I'm paying now. I still have an uneasy feeling about this job. I think I may take them up on their offer for coming down for a few days to see how I like it...

Do it! Its definately worth the $5k.

The only problem is the cost of Food is a tad more.

Really? My mom says that it's a little cheaper as well. She normally shops at the Lion or Wal-mart for food. I think I will be taking a greyhound bus down since it's about half the price of an airplain ticket, just to shadow with someone.

My first question was where do you currently live, but compared to Maine the cost of living will be going up significantly... if you accept, you'll be tightening your belt a lot.

Definitely check it out at least ... there is no committment to the shadowing. And support jobs can lead to other things Good luck.
