Since several people here have mentioned looking for jobs on craigslist, i decided to check my area. anything to look out for?

I found a PC Hardware tech job with a 45K a year salary but it doesn't list a company name or anything.

Well, I'd probably look for company name and phone # first... just a starting point.

they have none of that. you are supposed to just reply to the ad with a cover letter and resume.

Honestly man, I have no clue. I wish I could be more help Pontifex. To be honest, I'd be surprised if any reputable jobs were listed on Craigslist, but other things have surprised me in this world.

Maybe it's a legit company just looking for resumes of people they WON'T hire to put the pressure on people they WILL. You know, gesture to the stack of resumes and say "Here are the other people who have applied....you sure you won't budge on pay?"

Or maybe they are legit and just weird.

T-Mobile used to list like crazy in the Seattle area (when it was still free) until the backlash of the "big corporate" taking over the "little neighborhood" craigslist started getting them bad publicity locally. There are good and real jobs out there. In fact, most listings are legit.

Beware of work from home scams and anything that requires you to send money at any point in the process. Real jobs pay you, not the other way around. Also beware of commission-based jobs; it can be really hard to actually earn a buck on there. It's legit but not necessarily in the best interest of the employee.

Plenty of companies don't want their name listed. Applicants start phoning in and the bulk are unqualified and it becomes a real issue.

Also, contracting or headhunting agencies often don't have the permission to list their clients' names or don't want to list the client names so the applicants don't go straight to the company and cut them out of their commission.

Wasnt there a bank robbery committed where the robber listed a job opening on craigslist as a road worker or something but they were actually decoys?

i sent an email asking for more info and i got a generic autoreply with an address of a local job recruiter, so that must be why they didn't list a company. you'd think that they would at least list that they are a recruiter hiring for this position.

It's truly not unusual. For outside recruiters, once you've cleared the first interview (at the end) they should tell you the company name. If you don't do well in the first interview, they wouldn't tell you the name, just give you a "thanks, we'll call you."

I've been primarily using e-mail, mostly on Craigslist, to apply for jobs the past two weeks. Some of them maybe a bit of a tougher sell, some that I should be a shoe-in for (simple stuff like delivery driver, customer rep, etc.). All in all about 50 and not a phone call. Next week I'm going to start going to places in person, this electronic application shit is a waste of time.

It's a headhunter, might be worth your time, the job probably doesn't exist but if you are willing to work contract they might be able to find stuff for you

I'm already working with one recruiter although after meeting the woman on Tuesday, I still haven't heard from them. She said she would email me with more info later that day. I thought the meeting went ok but maybe it didn't?

plenty of reputable jobs are listed on CL.

people seem to forget: CL is WHY Classifieds no longer exist. It is one of the big parts of the internet that has been so disastrous to Newspapers over the recent years.

CL makes its money from Job listings and property listings--that's it. And they make a ton of money that way.

What does this mean?

It means that unlike the relationship, R&R, and general trade sections, the employment/housing areas of CL are EXTREMELY trustworthy.

There is absolutely NO REASON to think that a CL job listing is any less trustworthy than what was once found in print media. (but yeah, scams do exist, but common sense is generally reliable in weeding those out)

Apply for it.

just hang in there. Things absolutely SUCK out there right now. The only thing any person can do is extend all their options.

So long as you don't disclose any information that could be used to rob you blind, apply to whatever seems reasonable.

If the replies sound sketchy, then bail.

I got my job through Craigslist. In my case I dealt directly with the company, but I have had success with recruiters as well.

It costs you nothing to have them do the legwork for you. Get your name, number and paperwork out there, it's a good thing.
