So yeah I'm sure someone has already pointed out that she was jaywalking in front of police officers during a police initiative that was specifically to stop jaywalking? I figure you don't need your ID if you're not committing a crime. If you're planning on ignoring traffic lights rather than let your heart rate drop below 140bpm, bring your ID.

ID is also handy when you get run down by some guy on the way to work checking stocks on his Iphone.

wish they would do stuff like that in Dekalb. With NIU in town and all the students drivers have to be extra careful. Idiotic college kids will just walk out in the road. Even on pretty busy ones. they don't even look just walk out in the middle of the road.

Same here. So many clueless and drunk college kids who just walk right into traffic. I've had to jam on my brakes a couple of times, almost hitting someone when they just walked right into the street not even looking.

Bullshit, there is no law that says I have to carry any id.
Believe it or not, you are, if I'm not mistaken. I always take mine with me. I don't like it, I'd prefer to not bother if I'm sure I won't otherwise need it.

nope. if you're just generally out and about you don't need ID. even the statute above doesn't say ID has to be provided, it just says you have to tell them your name/address/dob. if you're engaging in specific activities you can be required to have proper ID (driving).

Depends on the state and why you are being stopped.

You just have to tell them who you are, truthfully.

There is no requirement to carry and produce an ID card, as far as I know.

If there were such a requirement, then why would there be such a big deal about getting an ID card to vote? IIRC, the big complaint about voter ID is that getting an ID card is a burden.

TIL: You need to always have ID on you when in the public, in the US. I guess it's to make it easier to identify a person if they get killed or otherwise are unconscious?

And that Americans are apparently ok with being arrested just for crossing the road.

I don't condone the way the officers did their job, but jaywalking is a huge problem in downtown Austin. I see accidents/narrow misses all the time.

There is a valid reason they're enforcing the statute.

So many people in this thread failed at reading comprehension.

I wish the cops around here did these kinds of operations instead of the shitty crosswalk stings where they dress one of their officers like a giant douchebag and he jumps in front of your car so they can ticket you.

Yeah I can't believe how many people are actually agreeing with the cops LOL.

I never realized there was even an illegal way to cross a street lol. I just look both sides if there's no traffic I go. I guess technically you're suppose to use a crosswalk but it's not like there are crosswalks everywhere, you're not going to make a huge detour just so you can find one.

Only if you are a resident alien. You are required to carry your green card. 'Muricans don't need an ID to be out in public.

Do people get arrested for speeding? No they get a freaking ticket and go about their day. You don't arrest people for jaywalking. The cops were being douchebags. Write her a ticket and go about your day.

I don't think you are require to do so, but you must identify your name if police ask.

correct

You can verbally provide ID. Also, it is only necessary if you are a suspect of a crime (like a traffic offense-speeding, or peace disturbance, etc.)

One of the caveats is something like a conceal carry license. That you MUST carry with you, otherwise you are in violation of it.

She wasn't arrested for jaywalking. She was arrested for failing to provide identification.

You have to know someone's identity to write them a ticket.

Again, the cops could have handled the situation better (been more understanding of the fact that she didn't initially hear them), but they were completely in the right in enforcing the law.

The city has been cracking down on both pedestrians and drivers (as well as bicyclists) as we've had several years in a row with record breaking numbers of pedestrian fatalities.
