I remember him playing little coffee houses here in town before he "made it" and he sucked then too.

i didn't like that song, but JM is actually pretty good when he plays songs other than his own. He recently did some blues shows in NY and LA and they were outstanding.

I think anyone who can actually play an instrument and write songs is a shoo-in for the Grammy's these days... Keys, Norah Jones, Mayer... it doesn't take much to win when your competition is cookie cutter rockers like hoobaskank and no-talent rappers/vocalists who contributed 0 (besides the vocal tracks) to the song.
