John Wayne airport, steep angle takeoffs

Flights out of John Wayne airport takeoff faster and steeper than launches at other airports. Why dont other airports have their planes take off using the faster steeper method?

Quieter for residents
Liftoff is fast and at a extreme angle (sorta like getting a amusement ride included with the price of the ticket)
Less chance for a bird to fly in the engine due to the higher angle of the takeoff

OC has short runways so they take off faster get to a certain height then cutback the engines for sound for the NB residents.

Worse, rich people who demand quiet. There are all sorts of noise regulations that restrict traffic at John Wayne. The planes need to take off fast and steep so that they have enough momentum to reduce power and coast through certain noise zones.

What are the downsides for steeper and faster takeoffs? Wouldnt less noise be agreeable to most folks?

lots of fuel used up and much higher stress on airframe/crew.

ALB is a steep take off airport, but it's due to the huge mountain you are flying towards at a few hundred miles an hour...

- massive increase on fuel burn
- unpleasant for pax (popping ears)

but yeah, fuel efficiency is #1

It's not exactly easy on the air planes. Harder accelerations and steeper take offs and landings put more wear and tear on the planes.

But which people? In addition to being more dangerous, using more fuel and putting more wear and tear on the airframe that kind of takeoff is louder closer to the airport. That's what John Wayne is forcing the pilots to do. They have to be super loud and faster close to the airport so that they can be slower and quieter further out.

Except when you're fogged out and have to divert to LAX :|

too bad. you get to fly so close to the downtown buildings it is surreal.

sit on the left side of the plane. it's good fun.

My parent's house is in the flight path about a mile away from the airport. The county settled with the residents in the area by providing people within a certain raidus of the airport that were in the flight path with sound retrofitting to the houses (double pane windows, sound resistant doors) and forcing the steep takeoffs in exchange for increasing the number of flights in the 90's. This REALLY cut down the noise from before. I grew up completely used to having closed captioning on because the planes were so loud and you would miss a bunch of dialog if you didn't have CC on.

There is not alot of houses directly in front of either end of the runway. On the typical takeoff side (towards the ocean) there is a freeway and a 18-hole golf course then a bit of commercial buildings and the first houses in the flight path are after that (where my parent's house is). The other side of the runway is all commercial buildings that have a lax noise code to begin with.

I fly alot out of SNA, and I agree the takeoff is a lot of fun. The takeoff feels more like a drag race because the pilot locks the brakes, spools up the engine and then lets the brakes go. I am pretty sure that this uses a lot of jet fuel but it is fun nonetheless.

i remember staying at a hotel in downtown SD a few years back.... a few blocks from the airport, and directly over the landing path of the planes. Damn that sucked - every few minutes the room would shake... no wonder it was so cheap

John Wayne also got a very short runway, limiting the aircraft that can operate out of it, along with the NIMBY crowd. So if you were expecting a nonstop to anywhere great, forget about it.

But a lightly loaded 757 on a cool night is just plain fun out of there.

It wastes more fuel, is much more dangerous for the passengers, and more stressful for the pilots.

Screw the residents. They knew damn well that there was an airport nearby, I have ZERO sympathy for people who buy a house right under a flight path and then complain about noise.

If you don't want to hear the planes, then pony up the extra $$$ to buy a house somewhere else. You got a good deal on that house because you agreed to tolerate the air traffic.

That said, my favorite approach is into Quito, where the plane has to weave between the mountains on their way to the runway.
