John Wayne Bobbitt was forced to have his toes amputated more than 30 years after his wife cut off his genitalia in 1993.

John, 57, revealed to The Sun on April 13 that his toes were amputated due to toxic peripheral polyneuropathy. The condition was caused by his stint at the military base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina during his time as a Marine in the ‘80s. At the time, the camp’s water supply was severely contaminated and has led to cancer and other ailments in people who spent time there.

I'm sure the doctors can clean out the infection and reattach them to work better than ever; just like his weed whacker.

I'm not sure, but my guess is that they were necrotic. It would be like reattaching a gangrenous limb.

If he gets off with just some lost toes, it's still better than biting the big one. Walking will be a bit of a trick though. Hopefully there's some sort of prosthetic. I have type 2 diabetes which is well controlled but even so, that sort of neuropathy is something that could be in my future.

I have painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy, mainly in my lower body. I had no idea it could cause necrotizing in extremities though. If anything, I'd have guessed maybe poor circulation might. Scary.

You might want to research that. I know that in the bad old days that it wasn't unusual for people with type 2 to need amputations. It's probably still true if you go for years and years w/o treatment.

Have you tried gabapentin for the neuropathy? I assume that you're getting the diabetes treated.

I'm a 40+ yr type 1, and I'm SUPER paranoid about my feet. Any kind of wounds, especially puncture, do not heal and are risk for amputation. I won't even walk around my own place immediately after cleaning my floors, I'm that cautious.

I just didn't realize the neuropathy itself could cause tissue death, sepsis, gangreene, etc. It did make all my leg hair fall out below mid-thigh, lol.

I just weaned off gabapentin (Neurontin) for the third time, as I didn't feel it helped. A number of years ago I was taking the max allowable dosage of 3600mg/day. Didn't help then either but my doctor keeps wanting to give it to me "just to see if there's been a change".

Well, if you don't have any really unpleasant side effects, it's worth it. Type one is a bitch. I've a known a few people with that. One woman doesn't put anything in her mouth without checking her blood glucose. It's especially bad since you haave to inject your insulin and can have highs and lows in your BG - both of which are dangerous, especially the lows.

I inject too but it's timed release so it's not as critical.

A1c for decades probably averaged 12ish. I got a pump and now it's 6. Unfortunately, consequences of years of poor control cannot be undone.

That not necessarily true. If we can regrow an ear on the back of a mouse, there should be something for nerve damage - eventually, certainly.

In the meantime, it might be worth doing some research.

For example, I posted a while ago about fisetin. It's just a bioflavonoid but it's very effective at killing senescent cells.

You can also try a mix of plant sterols. They were very effective for me in my lifting days.

I'm T2 and I'm noticing some kind of pain in my foot/toes, primarily when I miss taking my meds. When I take my meds and exercising it doesn't happen. But I only experience the pain at night when I'm trying to go to sleep. I'm not sure if the nerve pain is supposed to be specific to lying down and is a product of diabetes or is from something else. I'll be seeing a podiatrist here in the next month or so. Waiting on the referral.
