I agree. It's a beautiful piece of work. An old man preparing to die, wishing he could have lived a better life but accepts what he is. You live and learn, and if he could go through it again he would not have made the same mistakes.The NIN version comes across as a defiant 30-something going "OMG MY LIFE SUCKS, AND I CAN ACCEPT THAT!" whereas Johnny Cash lends a "Yeah. That sucked. Too bad I can't change it" kind of attitude to it.
