Probably Youngyear? Great QC there if it is! (that was sarcasm)

So this guy... sort of like those guys on Ben's Bargains that say, "this isn't a deal! You can get a 300W Deer for half as much! We all know that all power supplies are the same and that you don't really need to spend more than $15 on a power supply!!!"

that is pretty much exactly what he says. He always says he doesn't think anyone should spend too much on a power supply, and that this Logisys has worked well on all of the computers he has built. Kinda like you say about newegg reviews. "Joe Bob installed a PSU in his computer and it worked YAY!"

Then again he also posted a link to his blog the day the HD3870 launched saying it was the first DX10 card worth buying. Claimed it was uner $200 (it was actually $220), claimed it was better than the 8800GT for alot less money. Of course I called him on that too, and he never responded.

Well....My logisys has worked AWESOMELY for like 2 years (single core A64 3200+@2.6, 2GB Ballistix, 7600GT, two hd's, one DVDRW)

SO THERE HATERS!!!

But seriously...it has been surprisingly reliable for the $20 I paid for it.

So in the end, it's better to at least tell people to get a 'decent' sub 50$ PSU, then to have them buy something that's dangerous to work with

My take on this -

If they won't listen to your suggestion about which expensive power supply to get, they probably won't listen to your cheaper suggestion either. They will, instead, go out and buy some blingy piece of crap because it "looks like a good deal" and it "got good reviews on NewEgg".

Then, a year later, they will either -

a) Be here posting how great it is because it hasn't blown up, or

b) Suffer the problems and learn the lesson - a good PSU is essential.

Either way, you can't affect the outcome. Because they're, well, stubborn.

Hmmm, you have to be careful when judging a product lineup this way. A lot of people end up buying a cheap PSU that promises plenty of watts (maybe 3 times what they really need) and for 80% of them it runs fine for a couple of years (I feel sorry for the other 20%). And then Joe Bob decides to upgrade is video card and the PSU smokes after being asked to provide a whopping half its rated power.

Logisys 575 Watt

His blog claims he is an Electrical engineer. Ever time I call his bluff he never answers me, in fact he hasn't replied to a single direct question anyone has posed to him. I think it is funny that PSU claims it is SLi certified...I went to SLiZone and don't see a single Logisys PSU listed under their recommended products.

Isn't that the company that makes those wierd transparent blue plastic PSU's with dinky little yellow heatsinks?

Yeah.. ~600 watts for $25? I believe that.. Powmax could do it, and even included sparkly lights and magic smoke when you really started cranking the power!

As a continuation, I just got in a Seasonic SS-300ES unit from Newegg to replace an uncle's bad PSU. That thing is quiet! :Q I have an old S12-430 in my server that is definitely quiet, but I had no idea a PSU with an 80mm fan could be so quiet! I definitely love the choice made. And $42.99 shipped wasn't so bad for such a quiet unit with such high efficiency, even if it is only 300W.

I would definitely trust FSP and Sparkle PSU's. To some extent you are going to get what you pay for but those units are quality at the price point and have been for 10+ years.
there are tons of discussions ont he net about their rails and the variation of the lines.

I have used a ton of them in server builds and they are very good.

In a typical 350 dollar machine that's what I would get. In a supercharged gaming machine? Gonna have to spend over 50 bucks.

I bought 100+ psu from a game-related vendor and that thing was off on all the rails and even after RMA the replacement ended up had issues.

I would've said the same thing... up until about three years ago.

PCP&C used to use SPI, Nspire used to use SPI. Enlight used to use SPI. It used to be that if you didn't use SPI, you weren't using a good PSU OEM.

Now, one can say that FSP buying SPI ruined that, but FSP had a lot of good units too. Like all of those PSU's that came with Aopen and Inwin cases (before Inwin started making their own.)

The new group regulated stuff is almost crap. A lot of people look at some other designs and remark how they look a lot like FSP's newer designs, but I'm sorry. Everyone else is doing the same thing but with better regulation and less ripple.

If you're still thinking FSP/SPI is good because they were good a few years ago, you're living in the past.

Are you going to be running a Socket A off of it?

18A on the +12V rail.
