JPG or BMP ???

When looking at a picture from the internet, I can right click on it and click properties, and can see it is a JPG. But when saving to the hard drive, it will only save as a BMP. Only a few pictures do this, not all. Most save as they should.

I have had this happen before, and to fix it I just deleted all the internet files and cookies and pictures would save normal again. There is one difference this time though. When it has happened before, ALL pictures would try to save as BMP, this time only a few are trying to save as a BMP, and deleting the files is not fixing it. Any ideas why??

Clear your cache. Also try clearing all internet history including cookies. Reboot, then try.

minendo: Thanks for the reply, but as I said in my original post, I have already tried that with no luck. That is what I have done in the past to fix the problem, but it does not work this time. Any other ideas?? Thanks!!

lobadobadingdong: You are right, I can just save as a BMP and convert and that is what I have been doing. But there must be a reason for this and it just drives me nuts!!!

If this is the type that even says the .jpg picture name in the address bar of your browser, try this (in IE). Just to the left of the picture's url there is a little IE icon. Drag and drop that doohickey into IE's main browser window; see if you can now save it as a .jpg file.

SagaLore: Yes, newest version.

morkinva: Interesting idea you had. It took awhile but I found another picture that was saving as a BMP not a JPG. It was on a web page with lots of other stuff so I right clicked the picture, went to properties and copied the URL. I pasted the URL in the browser window and hit GO. Now I have just the picture on the screen, not the web page. I right click and hit "save picture as" and it comes up as a BMP again (just like it did from the web page) even though the URL ends in JPG.

Now is when I tried your idea. I click on the explorer icon next to the URL and drag it over the picture. Nothing seemed to happen, but I try to save again by right clicking the picture and hitting "save picture as" and it came up to save as a JPG.

This is not exactly a "fix" since it would be just as easy to save as a BMP and convert, but it does give some interesting information!! Any ideas what's going on???

So far as I can tell its some kind of code made to make copying pictures more difficult. The only places I've encountered such photos is on porn sites-- I mean, I've heard about them being on porn sites Does this happen only on some websites or all the time?

I had this problem once. Can't recall how I fixed it Although I might have reformated and never really fixed it.

You could try re-installing internet explorer.

Go into folder options and check to see what program is set to open jpg and bmp files. Change this if, for jpg it says something other than IE. This will save the file as whatever it is.

Uhm....no that won't work. On my system, Photoshop opens everything, but IE will still save the file what it is supposed to be.
