However, the exact date turns out surprisingly on July 22 as the first hand information we have received.
In the most updated plan, Intel Quad-Core Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB) will be further cut to $266, a second drop within 4 months since its release on March with 68.7% accumulated price drop. For the original price segment of Core 2 Quad Q6600, now it will be replaced by a new model Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB), pricing at $530.
The 3 models including E6550 (2.33GHz), E6750 (2.66GHz), and E6850 (3GHz) are only priced at $266, $183, and $163, around 40% cheaper than its 1066MHz version.
For the Value segment, Core 2 Duo E4500 will be a new release on July 22. Featuring 2.2GHz clock speed, 2MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB, its price is set at $133, while E4400 will further drop to $113.

Yup. I think this is a couple week old news, though.

I was too impatient to buy a Q6600 even though I was aware of the July price drop. However, It OC'ed to and beyond where I originally aimed at, so I'm overall happy. But yeah, $266 for a quad-core.. Intel's manufacturing capacity/ability is just amazing so that they can afford such a price cut. Hope those quads will OC just as good or even better than today's quads.

Of course, this is announced the day after I place an order for a C2D upgrade with a 6420, which I totally did not need to

how do Q6600s do in the heat department? i was thinking Q6600+tuniq around August (about the hottest time of the year in terms of ambient temperature) so will it do for a 3GHz OC on the Q6600? or will it be too hot?

Temps should be in line for a Quad and the Tuniq will keep it under control. The Q has been reviewd to get up to 3.4ghz so 3ghz should be a safe and stable number to shoot for

It does use double the power of a Dual code since in basically is 2 E6600's on a single chip

The date seems to correspond with what is referred to as the leadup to 'Back to School' season in the US (and presumably most other locales). I too am eagerly awaiting a drop in price on the quad-core family. Things are looking up.

Nice find,

The 2160/2180 seems to be the real AMD killer in this round - puts Allendale C2D into the same price segment as the AMD X2 3600+ AM2 budget dual core chip which was really the only compelling reason to look at buying a new AMD cpu/mobo combo since the Intel price cuts.

Odd, why not release a faster processer than the E6850 since they will only be charging $266 for it. Not good for ASPs, and may hint as a reaction to AMD's upcoming Phenom series...

Man, just about to pull the trigger for E6600 as present for my own Father's Day.
Glade I did a research.
Q6600 or E6850 still need some info.

Exciting news - while fancy quad-core CPUs aren't everything, they certainly are handy for some stuff (like HD encoding!).
