Wow...unexpected.

NO IT WASN'T!

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease found in individuals who have been subjected to multiple concussions and other forms of head injury. A variant of the condition, dementia pugilistica (DP), is primarily associated with boxing. CTE has been most commonly found in professional athletes participating in American football, ice hockey, professional wrestling and other contact sports, who have experienced head trauma, resulting in characteristic degeneration of brain tissue and the accumulation of tau protein. Individuals with CTE may show symptoms of dementia such as memory loss, aggression, confusion and depression which may appear within months of the trauma or many decades later. CTE is only diagnosed post-mortem.

Repeated concussions and injuries less serious than concussions ("sub-concussions") incurred during the play of contact sports over a long period can result in CTE. The brain changes in CTE and DP are similar and are delayed effects of repeated concussions and sub-concussions of the brain.

...

The individual may also progress through three stages of the disease. The first stage is characterized by its disturbances and psychotic symptoms. In the second stage of the disease the patient may suffer erratic behavior, memory loss, and the initial symptoms of Parkinsons disease. The final stage is full blown dementia as well as symptoms related to Parkinsons disease.

This type of shit happens all the time. Fuck pro football.

Gunshot wound to chest.

He probably hid concsussions and wanted his brain autopsied. Concussions are much worse for you than previously thought, even small ones. New information is always coming out on this.

Another athlete did the same thing a few months back. Suicide by shot to chest, keeping brain intact for autopsy.

I don't remember him being one to have concussions, atleast not reported ones.

That makes 8 players from the '94 team dead.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_sports_curse#Untimely_player_deaths

The Chargers defeated the heavily-favored Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1994 AFC Championship game. Within 18 months, Chargers running back Rodney Culver was killed in a plane crash in Florida and Chargers linebacker David Griggs died in a car accident. Linebacker Doug Miller was fatally struck by two bolts of lightning in July 1998 in Colorado. Center Curtis Whitley and defensive lineman Chris Mims both died in 2008, at age 39 and 38, respectively.[12] Defensive lineman Shawn Lee and linebacker Lew Bush both died in 2011 of cardiac arrest. Star linebacker Junior Seau was found dead in his Oceanside home on May 2, 2012. In total, 8 members of the Chargers' only Super Bowl team have died untimely deaths.

You don't need concussions to ruin your brain with a contact sport. Repeated sub-concussion contact can lead to CTE.

When they autopsy him he'll have the brain of a 70 year old.

My wife and I were just debating about my son (8 years old) playing flag football later this year. He plays basketball, soccer and baseball, all very well (He has a GREAT basketball coach ).

She does not want him to play even flag football because she knows he will be good at it and she does not want him to like it, thus leading to later issues with denying him from playing tackle football.

I am starting to think she may be on to something.

Listen to your wife. Would you be ok with him taking up boxing? I'd sooner start a kid fighting than "playing" football.

Man, I would never let my kid go out for Football. Not much better than Boxing at this point. If I ever have kids I am going to try and steer them towards Tennis or something.

I knew he battled depression, but I thought he had got past it. Some people just can't handle being normal again. I hope this wasn't the case with Junior, cause he was one of the true good guys.

Junior played many many years of professional football. A kid playing a few years of high school ball isn't a big deal.

I guess I can't blame you. I played and was pretty good. I know I had at least one concussion, but back then you just took some aspirin. There wasn't a lot of talk about concussions then. But most players come out fine with little or no issues.

If I have a kid they are not playing football or ice hockey... and I love hockey. Please listen to your wife, this stuff happens to even high school athletes.

What a selfless and heroic thing for JS to do.

Doubt it. Even playing for a couple of years has to be worse for you than a lot of the, beside you would likely be playing Pop Warner as a little kid or something if you are at playing in High School. Accumulating the hits can't be great for you. Would rather just have my wee ones in something like Tennis, Soccer, Baseball; whatever has fewer regular hits to the head.

No, this was not heroic, this was tragic. He had many that loved him here among the living, he didn't deserve to die at 43, even by his own hands. I understand your point, but this was not the right choice.

I don't know. They say it only takes one really bad concussion to affect a person the rest of their life.

My high school did not have football, so I did not have to go through that. However, even basketball has its risks: I was knocked out cold by a guy trying to stop my fast break layup. I must have had a concussion.

I only know what happened the rest of that day from what people have told me, including attending a birthday party!

Law & Order SVU did an episode about a former star QB with CTE who killed himself the same way after he got off on rape charges. It was very disturbing to see them enact some of the CTE symptoms. Such a sad situation.

oh and RIP. He was one of the best LB's ever.

As a San Diegan who watched Junior play during his entire career here, and what he had done for our community. What a joy he was. He made me love football with his enthusiam and heart. I was so happy for him when he helped bring our Chargers to the SB. I cheered him on as a Patriot when they went to the SB. This is a sad time in San Diego history. I am in complete shock, yet not surprised at his demise considering how hard he played the game. And what a game he played.

RIP Junior

20 years(just in the NFL) of playing middle linebacker, just think of the number of impacts his brain was exposed to.
