how long should I expect to be there? hopefully I don't actually have to do jury crap and can just go back to work, thoughts from people who have had to serve this beautiful democratic system ?

Man, I loved jury duty.

It got me out of work for a couple days, I caught up on some reading. I met couple cute girls, and had lunch with them.

All in all it was pretty awesome. I might not have liked it as much if i had not been compensated by my work though. I dunno.

My advice.. come in a little late, and just go sit down by the cutest girl you can see. I mean your gonna be with someone all day probably until they call you, so you might as well enjoy it.

You can be on jury duty with me :lips:.

Never been called for it, although it does sound like it could be interesting. Although I think I'd hate to be one of the people picked for a long trial like the OJ Simpson case was.

i got grand jury, not (petit) trial jury. we get to say whether there is enough evidence for it to go to trial or for there be a charge.

I'm on a Grand Jury as well. 18 months of service, every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Fairly painless. Decent change of scenery since I am salaried. Free forty bucks! (Plus lots of doughnuts and soda)

I just got myself out of jury duty a couple weeks ago. After avoiding it with various excuses for years I finally manned up and went in to do my duty. Boy was that a mistake. So here is my little story.

I go in to the court house prompty at 7am on monday morning. I check in and sit down. Since my lucky juror number was #2 I figured hopefully they pull them in sequential order and I can get in and out quickly. Well it didn't work that way and they started pulling random numbers/names. So after sitting there for a little over an hour I hear an announcement come over the PA, "The following people called please get up and report to this room, do not go to the other room as jurors normally do". So the first name they call is mine, "oh boy" I think to myself.

So they take a group of about 25 of us to this special room with a bunch of armed guards. Then they march us up to the top floor and parade us into a court room. After we sit down the judge goes on and says, "You group of jurors have been specially selected to sit on double murder one case". "Great" I think, "My first ever jury experience and I have to get a friggin murder one trial". So they call names, and of course mine is the first name they call. So I go sit in their comfy chairs in this jury box, cursing to myself. They finally get all the names called for their primary selection group. The judge goes on to read the charges and allegations of what the defendant did. Turns out these two kids (17 & 18) decided to rob a guy, kill him and steal is ****** sneakers. Yep, murdered a man for sneakers. And they wonder why so many inner-city minority youth are written-off as hopeless, well this is one of thoes reasons.

So the judge goes on to say that the jurors selected for this trial will be sequestered for the duration of the trial, which is expected to last about two weeks. Now I'm really sweating. So we go through a good 4 hours of questions and cross questions and this and that. Finally they get down to the selection. They run through the names of people who will not be selected, while counting I realize that there is only one more person to dismiss. At that point the lawyers decide it's a good time to have another friggin meeting of the minds for a good hour. I haven't had lunch, anything to drink or a smoke in about 8 hours so I'm pissed. They come back out and ask the two remaining potentials some questions, thoes two being me and this other guy. After another hour of ridiculous questions they finally make their selection. They say Mr. Sampson, you can go. YES! ****** YES!

Never again will I attend jury duty.

This is probably a dumb question, but what all exactly does the jury do?

They listen to the case, debate, and then form a verdict of guilty or not-guilty? Then the judge decides on the actual punishment for the sentence. I don't think this something I've ever learned in school.

Only thing I know about court is watching part of Twelve Good Men.

No, it is that easy. This time around I figured I would give it a shot because I really didn't feel like going through the effort to get out of it, and I guess I felt it was my "civic duty" (as if getting raped up the ass everyday by ridiculous taxes and dealing with ineffective govt. isn't duty enough).

I know for a fact that I will not be called upon for a absolute minimum of 8 years. After that I know I can come up with enough excuses to get me out of it for the next 30.

that is because even though you "got out of it" they still consider that you served since you were eliminated by their doing.
