$343 gets you a Seagate 400GB HDD. Not as cheap per GB as most drives, but this may very well be the best overall drive available on the market today. It's the new 7200.8 (not 7200.7) which means it has a lower 8ms (!!) access time and uses native command queuing to put it up there with 10k RPM drives. And of course the 5 year warranty. If you can afford it, this is THE drive to get.

Sata version is also now available but unfortunately at $80 more.

Ordered 2 last night for a mirrored pair Was willing to pay a premium (obviously) to get the new 7200.8 in SATA.

Haven't been following the length of warranty drops recently. Are the Seagates the only ones with the 5 year warranties? WDs and Maxtors with 1 years?

What is amazing is that the MSRP is suppose to be $299 for the 400 GB SATA version. The retailers are trying to milk it for all its worth with its limited showing in stores before the holidays. Seriously, WAIT a month on this one. They have a serious 33% price inflation simply because of the holidays and limited supply (this on top of the normal 8-15% increase above cost).

IIRC warranties are as follows:

Seagate - 5 years
WD - 3 years on new drives only - JBSE series I believe
Maxtor - 3 years (on new drives only?)

That one only has 8MB cache. I would prefer the 16MB cache 250GB model since it makes full use of two platters, rather than three and I don't need more storage than that at the mo' anyhoo.

1 year on older drives. couldn't find it on WD's site, but as per newegg, all SE drives have a 3 year warranty (well, the OEM drives anyway, but that would be dumb). example

Auric: cache isn't everything. Where did you find data that says this Seagate drive has 3 platters? It's not listed on their site yet.

Cache isn't everything but it's something. I do lots of data copying on the same disk (un/archiving etc.) so can definitely make use of it. The 7200.8 series has 133GB capacity platters so do the math

That price is ridiculous. I bought mine for 238 shipped from CompUSA on Turkey Day. Still need to get another one though but in SATA.

Newegg does it again. They're either priced very competitively on well-stocked items, or total ripoff for relatively new, scarcer items.

I'll pass.

I dont know, 16mb cache on the maxtor drives made a huge difference, we'll have to wait and see 4 benchmarks

yeah I wouldnt touch this thing with a 10ft pole, but nice 2 see these drives finally coming out, wait to see something from western digital soon 2, and probably even later an update to hitachi series whos allready had a 400gb drive out for a while

all these drives have pretty much made the arguement for tiny 10,000rpm western digital sata useless, unless they drop in price alot or gain capacity

I really like the whole "pwn or own" thing and most people have let it die like "whahhhhhhh--sssup?" and "Yeah, that's the ticket!" It's a shame.

But you, with one little post, have renewed my faith humanity and jump started my heart with that pleasant little phrase.

what is the origin of the word 'pwn'? is there a difference between 'pwn' and 'own'? how is it pronounced: "pone", "pawn"?

I think "pwn" evolved from people mistyping "own" because the P key is right next to the O key. I guess eventually it just stuck...

back when WarCraft was popular, a map designer mispelled "own" as "pwn" in the phrase - "player has been owned" resulting in "player has been pwned"...

thus "you have been pwned" was born...
