Just a quick question: Which heat sink should I go with?

Need to put it on the Gigabyte P55A-UD3 over an i5-760. Used a Tuniq Tower in the past and been generally happy, but looks like the Zalman's and Xigmatek's are ruling newegg for best rating right now. Only problem is, I was under the impression that heat sinks were generally universally compatible, but when I filter results at the egg for 1156-compatibility, I get only a couple crappy results.

Will both of these fit that mobo and cpu?

Is there any real difference between the 92mm and 110mm besides space considerations (have an Antec 902 and 5870)?

Thanks

Let me tell you your first mistake: you're using Newegg ratings .

As long as your have a bracket for the socket, any heatsink will fit the mobo with exception to RAM height and maybe chipset placements, but overall, it will fit. Those are both very outdated. The Scythe Mugen 2 is a little old, but still a monster at cooling (also a monster when installing...). If you're going for light overclocks, the Hyper 212+ is the best you'll get out there. If you want to be as aggressive as you can, look at the ProMeg, VenemousX, NH-D14 and the likes.

I'd probably just do some mild OC and go for the Hyper 212+. Not sure if the extra clock speeds are worth the extra $$.

OP, the reason that your search results on Newegg didn't come up with much useful is that when you choose the "LGA 1156" drop down, you are getting results of heatsinks that are only compatible with LGA 1156. Most heatsinks are, as you say, fairly universal. To get around this, you have to go into the Power Search and check every box that contains LGA 1156. This is a PITA, so I usually just look at the full list.

That's encouraging. The hyper 212+ is what's on my short list based on the reviews and price for either stock or mild OC.

It's odd though that its base is not totally flat: the heat pipes are slightly proud of the aluminium base. Not sure if that's a design feature or an invitation to take some glasspaper to it.

My only concern is the clearance on it: the engineering drawings on the CM site are not sufficiently detailed to ask Asus if will work on the new p8p67 boards.
