I'd likely run the RAID for my OS, but you might need the controller drivers during the Vista install, whereas you won't for the Intel port...

If you run raid0 on two old 80GB drives...just pray that neither one fails. Or you suddenly lose the whole array and all your data goes poof.

So its best if i keep the 250GB drive for Storage then and other important stuff like my pics and music.

You know what, im gonna buy a WD 640GB and scrap the 2 80GB drives, then use the 250GB for my OS and the 640GB for Storage.

Good point Denithor, however if he uses the raid0 for os and program installs those can be easily reinstalled, the pictures/pirated-music/movies are what is hard to replace

I dunno Sniper but it doesn't seem like there is any real reason to scrap them. How much data do you actually have? Worse comes to worse you can use those drives in Raid 1 for your most valuable stuff...

i dont really have that much tbh i have about 14gb of music and 40Gb of films and TV programmes and about 10 gig of pics that are backed up to DVD aswell. ive had the OS on the 2x 80GB before and it ran fine, but i was wondering if id benefit from having the OS on the ACHI controller and with it being SATA2.

I suppose you might get a minor improvement from running your OS & installed programs on the 2x80GB in raid0 but I personally wouldn't put any data or long-term storage stuff on a raid0 array, especially with old drives. The OS/programs are fairly easy to restore if the array crashes, family photos & music & etc not so much.

And a single WD6400AAKS or WD6400AALS (new Caviar Black drive) will probably about match the performance of a pair of old 80GB drives in raid0 (especially if they're old enough to only have 8MB cache). If you get a new bigger drive, just keep everything on it and sell the older smaller drives on eBay or the FS/FT forum here. Heck, you can probably make enough off the three drives to pay for a bigger-faster-cooler-quieter single drive.

EDIT: Read this thread.

id prefer to just ditch the 2x 80 D/max 9 drives that are 8mb cache and keep the D/max 11 for my OS and then the 640gb for all my pics, films and Music, at least this way i can keep a lot more films instead of deleting stuff when the 250GB gets a bit full.

Except you'll get better general performance with your OS on the faster new drive.

Like I said, just sell off all three old drives and you should about cover the cost of the new big drive.
