This is a new law? I thought you always needed a passport to get through customs at the airport upon re entry into the US?

I think this applies for Canada and Mexico, that's why?

I mean duh you need a passport to get through to Europe or Asia, but I'm not sure if I'm interpreting this law correctly, because it does seem logical that only Canada and Mexico are affected by this change.

Also the bahamas. There were a few countries where american travel was so frequent that it was "no big deal" if you didn't have a passport, they'd let you use your driver's lic to get back in... no longer.

Oh I see... So this applies to crossing into the US via its land borders.... Makes more sense now..

At first I was like WTF is this all about?

There were several countries like Canada and Mexico, as well as a few Caribbean nations that did not require you to have a Passport to enter. In return, the US didn't require you to have a passport. Just a DL and Birth Certificate. That will now be no more, unless you are a special person or have one of the few exceptions such as Merchant Marine ID, and certain kind of "passes." Basically, for us normal folk, you WILL have to have a Passport. For air travel, sea travel, and when crossing via land.

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Do Not Pass Go, Straight to Guantanamo.

Edit: Seriously, it's not a laughing matter. You are now just another undocumented foreigner as far as Immigration is concerned. Speaking American English perfectly will only get you the "poor bastard - glad I am not him" look from a U.S. Consular officer. No passport, no more entry USA, comprende? Of course you can always apply for a green card. Otherwise its a lifetime of lurking at international airports asking tourists if they "can help a fellow American."

U.S. Embassy. I was told that as soon as you enter the foreign country you let the embassy know you are there and give them some contact information. That way if the ****** hits the fan(like the whole Israel thing a few months ago), they can get you out of the country.

Some Caribbean countries didn't require a passport for US travellers.
