Heck, I use whichever pair of cans I feel like at the time (Koss PortaPro, KSC75, Shure SE210) with whichever device I want to (lappy, Zen, Zen Nano, etc).
I'm pretty sure the iPhone is considered one of the best portable integrated sources, ever.
Be sure to use Monster cables in between your headphones and DAP. Also, double check that they are gold plated.
This is more comparable to trying to power an SLi setup with a 200 watt power supply. The mp3 players simply do not enough juice to handle the ohms of the headphones. Unlike monster cables, it will significantly impact the sound of the headphones.
It doesn't sound good. Go find a real, stand-alone devoted source with a nice amp and do some justice to those hi-fi headphones.
I use Sony MDR-V150's with my computer's onboard headphone out and listen to MP3's, some as low as 160kbs.
Pure aural euphoria.
Audiophiles suck.
I urge everyone to try out some electrostatic headphones.
Really, this is just about impedance. Plugging in your HD 650s into a device that doesn't have enough oompf to handle them will make them sound like they are worth $50. The OP is right about needing an amplifier, but I don't think you always need the whole system to do justice to your headphones, just get a nice portable amp to bring along with you. If your headphones are 300 ohms, find something to power those suckers.
Personally, I don't travel with my good headphones as they are so much bulk anyway.
