Just a thought on PC gaming

See how with all these talks about console is the future of gaming and the way how it seems like developers prefer to develop for consoles only right. Isn't it the PC market that pushes technology forward and the console just picks up on that technology and integrates it?

Let's say hypothetically developers decide to stop developing first grade games for PC, and all PC gamers gets are ports of games that have been released on consoles long before. Wouldn't that drive down the PC gaming market to the point where PC gamers would move onto console games? Which leads to low demands for newer hardware such as videocards and cpus. Then in turn there'll be less money into development of new hardware which at the same time also increases their cost.

I mean, people arent gonna spend thousands on new computer and have no games to play on it right? And consoles gamers aren't gonna accept new consoles being released every year. But eh, just a thought. All I know is that I spent $1000 to upgrade my computer and theres nothing new to play. Bioshock played on console, GTA4 chances are will get for console since who knows when it'll come out on the PC, assassins creed isnt even out yet so I'm just gonna get on on the console.

Consoles are basically PCs optimized for gaming with shitty controls. The day a console gets a keyboard/mouse input, I'll switch.

Also, if developers stopped making PC games, it wouldn't just drive down the PC gaming market, it'd drive down the PC market in general. Insane game graphics are the only real reasons for NVidia and ATI to develop top flight hardware, aside from some very limited professional applications. That and the only reason that people buy PCs that cost more than $400 is gaming.

I don't think it'll happen though. There are some types of games (ie: RTS, simulators) that simply can't be played on a console with current interfaces.

Personally, I avoid the upgrade costs by simply going without. I buy/build a top flight computer, with the knowledge it won't be able to run many demanding games 3 years down the road. I typically have a 5 year upgrade cycle where I'll just build a new top flight machine.

PS3 has this.

Anyway, I'd say playing on a 50" HDTV vs an 18" PC monitor is much more enjoyable. I think consoles are the future at this point. It's just not worth spending that much on upgrades just to play a game. I'd rather spend the upgrade money on new games rather than hardware to run the games.

I know it's bringing up a really, REALLY old argument, but a couple problems here:

1. The only game that supports kb/m input is UT3 on the PS3. It's a shitty game, so what's the point?

2. The screen has no bearing on whether you're playing a PC or a console game. You can play PC games on a 50" HDTV, if you have the money. Conversely, many console owners don't have a nice TV and instead elect to hook their console up to their PC monitor, which may be something decent like a 20-24" LCD. And a huge number of console users probably have them hooked up to old low-definition CRT TVs. That's just like how a huge number of PC owners have PCs that are bad for gaming.

Would you rather play by yourself on a PC or sitting next to a hot chick playing halo 3?

Plus - the long term investment for a console is much less than it is for a PC. And it's much easier to develop for a console [talking xbox360] than it is for a PC - you only have to worry about developing/debugging for 1 specific platform.

I'd say the future of PC gaming will be MMO's, puzzle games, Simulators/RTS's, etc until console games start offering keyboard/mouse option. Once that happens - the PC will probably be limited to casual gamer / office use.

What about sitting next to a hot chick playing UT99 on two PC's next to each other?

I've done that exactly, a few times, and I know what I'm talking about enough to say that I will never forget it, it was a nerd's dream back then. Today it's all fantasy With that said, I'd give any of my best owned PC's and Consoles in my entire gaming career just to have a walk in the park with a hot chick and just discuss about random things rather than having a hot chick enclosed in a room with games. What's the point though... we all know that women and real life is much more important than anything gaming could possibly offer.

The thing is that Console gaming... is hmmm... well it sucks, and don't get me wrong, PC gaming is also currently having quite a similar issue. But all of this of course are my useless and irrelevant two cents, and perhaps an extra half.

http://www.systemwars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69169 (warning, lots of pics to load)

Above is a link with pics of games due to come out in 08 (there are 5 or so that shouldn't be on that list though, DNF for example).

When consoles start to make a tiny dent in the number of half decent games compared to what the PC has and will have, maybe I'll have a second look.

This said, there is a market with people who don't have the time, energy and/or intelligence to buy good gaming PC and maintain it. The console has it's place but it'll be a long time coming before it's better for me.

Until then the PC is king, my 360 sits neglected in the corner with all of 9 half decent games (ok, 3 of them are good, 2 are from the old xobx) i could find that i could find to tie me over for when i travel (mail myself the 360). My closet is stacked with box upon box of PC games, most of which i find very good with a few exceptions that for some reason just happen to be console ports for the most part, must be a coincidence.

So no, i don't think the PC will be abandoned gaming wise in the next 10 to 20 years. What you see now is businesses doing what business do, making a grab for money.
I have no doubt there are more consoles then gaming PCs, and PC game companies see this as well so they are focusing on consoles. It must seem like a win win situation for them, easier to make, lower standards (except for releasing bug free, but give it a few years and it'll be the same as the PC), more impulse buyers/kids and a larger market. So they make a game for the console and expect PC gamers to love it because it was so awesome by console standards, and are shocked when they see the sale figures. Over time these companies will become console exclusive or make a half ass effort to put it on the PC in the hopes of a few extra bucks but not really giving a rats ass.
This may sound like doom and gloom but i say good riddance, new companies will rise up to their their place and tap into the market they left behind. These same new companies will also look at the mistakes of the old ones, as well as bring fresh new ideas that they are free to develop (*cough*ea*cough*). So while the companies jumping ship will scream the PC gaming market is dead or dying, i pay them little attention as i do not see what they are talking about with my current backlog of good PC games i have yet to finish, and old ones to visit/revisit.

It's happening right now.

lmfao im sorry but are we pc gamers not aloud to play on 50" HDTV's.........you obviously do not game at all or have seen a decent pc setup playing a decent game with all the bells and whistles turned on because then you wouldnt be so quick to give your bad opinion.

The only games that are good for consoles are footy and racing and tekken style , First person shooters should be banned from consoles as its just too horrible.

That may indeed be possible, but I think that isn't true for the vast majority. It's far more likely that someone will have invested into HT gear for daily TV and movie use and that's where any console they purchase will also end up while their PC(s) will end up at a corner desk or in an office. The two are generally kept separate for a myriad of reasons and most people aren't going to be willing to spend the $$$ the maintain two such set-ups.

tbh the only games i've ever been completely addicted to were tournament competitive FPSs and then MMORPGs. I don't want to do either on a console.

If it gets to the point where consoles are just locked PCs with keyboards and mice, what's the fucking point?

I actually have a decent PC setup (in sig) and can play almost any game out there with all the bells and whistles. I've spent many dollars buying and upgrading my PCs over the years. I also happen to have a 50" HDTV and a PS3 which I enjoy. I have every right to put my opinion out there. Let's keep this thread for intelligent discussion.

I like PC gaming too, but what's with all the point-and-click adventure games? It seems kind of excessive to me. Probably half the games there were just old-style adventure games with bad 3D graphics.

Yeah that fool cannot find a flaw in your argument so he just bashes you. You 100% right if they put keyboard and mouse on consoles and only charge $250ish (like xbox 360, wii) then there is no reason for pc games. I am also sick of PC gaming its expensive and excessive. But i love RTS and FPS soo we need keyboard/mouse on consoles please.

PC gaming is a rich mans game or one of those people similar to the black guy with a $500 car with $10,000 rims

The point is that without the PC gamers to drive the hardware side of things forward, the next product life cycles of console won't be as great. Like many have said, consoles are pretty much just integrated PCs. They share similar hardware that was made FOR the PC, using technologies that PC gamers helped drive forward by investing in (buying that $800 video card). If PC gaming ever does die, I wouldn't be surprised to find $1500 consoles in the future.

But I suppose by that time I should be over gaming anyways

But, isn't Unreal Tournament 3 the only PS3 game that supports keyboard / mouse? I really wish there to be (good) games that made use of the PS3's ability to utilize a keyboard / mouse in game, but I guess that is the fault of developers and not the console itself. (PS3 owner here, so I am not trying to put it down)

Good luck with that. I was away for along time because I worked 60-70hrs a week, but now that I have the time, I'm as avid as I was in my teens.

I understand what zorrt is saying. Consoles have increasingly gleamed features and tech from high end PCs with every iteration. What he's saying is if they ever 'kill' the PC for games, the idea well will run dry (I don't think gaming on the PC will ever disappear, although I suppose its remotely possible it could become primarily a business machine that virtually no one played games on, killing the high end hardware market. The later is also an unlikely scenario IMO)

Or, in a nut shell, he's saying consoles relegating the PC to secondary status would be like killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

I don't think we would see $1500 consoles though, I think its more likely advancements would just stagnate. I think the real problem is better graphics, for many of us, is becoming a "Who cares?" advancement. Its lost its wow. We are in diminished returns territory now. You double the polygons on your average game down, it takes twice as much horse power and barely looks any better. This helps consoles because even using last years hardware they look "good enough" compared to the latest PC game. I think consoles themselves will have to grapple with this soon enough.

@AstroManLuca

You include RGPs? If so then a fair few of those could turn out to be good. Adventure games, some are for kids and others i have no idea why they even bother. But there isn't that many they look like they are total crap, still a lot more games that i like coming out on the PC then on all the consoles combined.

@KeypoX
If i had to chose, i would drop my money on putting extra into a PC for gaming then a work PC and console. $600 for a good work computer (i like everything to load fast regardless if it's a game or not) and $400ish extra for game related stuff to be able to play ALL the older PC games and many of the new ones. Then there is the fact that unless i have 3 or more consoles, there is only one or two new games released each year that i have the slightest interest in (note this is based on what types of games i like), whereas for the PC i don't have enough money or time (still looking to buy WC3 but to many new games) for them all, and there is more coming! This may change some day, but it won't in time for my next computer upgrade.
You get what you pay for with consoles, less for less.

Thinking is hard. You might not try so much of it.

Computer technology pushed envelopes well before you could game on them. The fact that a PC is multi-use tool assures this would continue to happen, regardless of gaming (but gaming isn't going anywhere).

You started out by saying that a 50" HDTV is better than an 18" PC monitor. This was not a discussion about monitors. I don't know what else you would expect some to think of that other than consoles are for big TV's and PC's stay on the little screens. Obviously that is not the case. Obviously you are aware of that too. So why make a comment like that? After I read it, I scrolled down to see if someone would call you out on that. While SniperDaws injected a lot of opinion about what should and should not be played on a console and assumed that you do not game, he did call you out on a rather odd comment. Of course you're entitled to your opinion. Might be a good idea if the content of your opinion is relevant to the forum topic though. Had you simply left out the sentence about the HDTV vs PC monitor, your post would have been on point.

On that note, my opinion of the PC vs Console debate is that they will both exist for a very long time. Unless MS pulls the plug on Direct X and OpenGL implodes and video cards stop getting manufactured with focus on gaming performance, I think games will continue to be developed for the PC. Maybe not as many as for the consoles though. Perhaps a future console will do as a good as a top PC rig in graphics, control settings, mods etc. I would probably switch due to the availability of games (both in terms of quantity and release schedule). Only the future can really tell! (sorry to end that like an after school special!)

You know all the bull shit with hype of the numbers Epic is throwing around saying PC gaming is dying?

Those numbers were only 30% of the total PC Games sales. Only 30%. The NPD did not account for the other 70%, which was digital distribution. That means PC Gaming is stronger than the xbox 360. Also consider, PC Game teams tend to be smaller, resulting in a greater profit for each person, as well as the digital distribution demonstrating that Publishers, the main problem with publishing a PC game, will no longer be in the forefront.

So PC Gaming is not going anywhere, sorry to burst your bubble [insert 12 year old console whore's name in here.]
