Cute pup! Dog's aren't complainers.. they usually just want to be happy, and please their human.

You always have the option of taking her to small claims court to try to recover some of the vet bills. It's a gamble whether you'll win or not, (your word against hers, you paid for the dog knowing it was injured, just not the extent of the injuries)

We were going to rescue a tiny Jack Russel bitch several years back. She was with a nice loving family who was caring for her...and while she was playing, she ran into something (don't remember what it was now) and put out an eye. While we were ready to take on the responsibility of a young dog that had been abused by her previous owners, we decided that the extra costs for caring for this one was just more than we wanted to take on...a couple of months later, the couple's female had pups of her own, and we got one of them.
THAT was a mistake...he was a wild child of the sort that put Charlie Sheen to shame...<shudder>

I don't think she is associated with any agency. She is known as a animal lover to her friends, so she is the go to lady for any animal rescue.

Pics coming soon.

This is reckless endangerment of that poor puppy. She didn't take the dog to the vet, to be sure that the injuries weren't as serious they are.

If she doesn't bend over backwards to help you pay the vet bills, it's time to let her friends know just what passes for "rescue" with this woman.

You're obligated to do everything humanly possible to be sure that no animals are put at risk in her home.

Where would this lady "rescue" a 8 week old puppy from? $300 rehoming fee is fine if it's a legitimate shelter and includes some vaccines, care, housing and often a spay or neuter, but an 8 week old puppy from some lady? Has it had any vaccines? There's no way it cost her anywhere close to that much, especially since she didn't even take it to the vet. A crooked jaw = fracture - anyone involved much with animals knows that. She probably bought it from someone else for $200 and sold it to you.

Also, be really careful with that jaw injury. High chance of re-breaking, problems with the wire, etc. Sometimes you use the teeth to attach the wire and those puppy teeth are really small and somewhat fragile. Probably needs to eat gruel only for many weeks - follow the vet's instructions exactly.

I just don't know why people pay for animals that are already sick or injured. Like buying a car that you know isn't working.

I think most Jack Russels give Charlie Sheen a run for his money

I really wouldn't have a chance in court. I paid in cash so I don't even have a record of the transaction :\

Thanks for the tips. We are following the vet's instructions to the T. She's going to be on a wet food diet for the next month or so.

I don't think I agree with your used car analogy. There is only one dog with her personality...that's what we fell in love with. If I was offered a used 2010 Camaro with dents/scratches, I would say no thanks and find another. There would be nothing tying me to that Camaro since they are all made the same.

So last week we adopted the cutest damn puppy (schnoodle). I called the lady who rescued her on a Sunday. Told her we wanted to see the puppy, so we arranged to meet the next day. I call her on Monday and get no answer. She finally calls back with news that we won't be able to see the puppy. Apparently she ran into a sprinkler, really injuring her jaw. Lady says the vet said she will be OK and her jaw will just be really swollen for awhile. I told her we still want to see the puppy and we agree to meet. We finally meet her and my girlfriend falls in love instantly. The jaw looked absolutely terrible. It was all swollen and crooked. Lady says the jaw is crooked because of the swelling. I wasn't going to let her injury keep us from taking her, so we pay the $300 rehoming fee and take her home. Over the past week we start to question the ladies story. This puppy is only 8 weeks old... we have seen how fast she is capable of running. There is no way she could have gotten enough speed to damage her jaw like that.

So today we decided to get a second opinion on the injury. The vet we brought her today immediately told us that her jaw must be fractured. He took some X-Rays and sure enough he said it is fractured and that he would have to install a wire to fix it. He also said that there is no way this injury came from a sprinkler head. He said there are infected puncture wounds and that it looks like she was attacked by another dog.

So now my girlfriend and I are pissed. This whole procedure is going to cost around $700. Since the lady who sold this puppy to me is responsible for her injury, do I have a right to demand my $300 back?

*Update*
Called the seller. I told her the whole story. She was shocked that her vet didn't find the problem I told her I don't expect you to give me the $800, but I think the right thing to do in this situation is to refund me my $300. Her response: "I'm at a party right now. I'll give you a call later." Click.

Oh just wow. There are so many things wrong with what you described and all of them have you in common. I don't want to say too much since it's late but if you love this “puppy” take care of it. Dogs are not TVs at BB where you just can bring them back because you decided there is something wrong with it. The dog was injured when you got it. Taking care of sick people and animals costs money you should have known what you were getting into. If the dog runs in to more health problems or destroys your furniture are you going to demand money from this woman.
Be more responsible use your head. Careless irresponsible people with a lack of imagination shouldn't have pets, and i hope you don't have children of the human kind.
You decided to take responsibility of the animal as soon as you walked out of the door

So much fail....Did you even read my posts?

All I'm going to say is we love this dog more than anything. Even if the surgery was over 2k I would have paid it. I'm just pissed that this lady probably didn't even bother to take her to the vet. This poor thing would have died from infection if we didn't take her in today. I want my money back because that bitch doesn't deserve it.

He really is! I'm considering adding him to my ignore list. But then again, he is pretty entertaining with his rants about puppies and children.

Do you know how this woman got the puppy? Since the dog was taken to the vet, did you ask if the puppy was given it's first set of shots? If yes, ask for the vet records for the shots but diagnosis of her jaw? Why didn't you think of taking the puppy to the vets the day you got her or asap?

She may have scammed you but no offense, you are little naive on how you've handled things so far.

I'm glad she's in good hands now.

Did you adopt as in rescue, or adopt as in purchased? $300 is a pretty damn expensive rehoming fee compared to every shelter and rescue I've ever visited. Sounds to me like you might have been taken by a backyard breeder and might consider calling the state on her ass.

How did you find her in the first place?

yeah sounds like a puppy flipper. Probably bought the dog for $50-100 and didn't do shit but slap it on craigslist for $300 and calls herself a rescue. A rescue would have included shots, fixing, and usually a free vet check up. Both of my dogs were $60 from the pound and the only thing I had to pay for were rabies shots.

Yeah, if you search his name and "pet" you get some weird stuff.

Kill the dogs kill the owners and kill the usless breed. All forms of pet ownership should be illegal. Anyone with a Pitbull is a moron.

Life is hard and has a cycle of birth and death. Dog is just a dog an animal is not human, what has to be done has to be done. Just think of all the children in Africa that could have been immunized and their lives saved, with the money you spend on an old sick dog. It is immoral and selfish to care for a pet when humans are suffering. I feel deeply sad and sorry for you.

LOL yeah this guy is certifiable.

I agree cute but is it better than a child? For a fraction of the amount of money you will spend on owning this animal you could save a child's life in a third world country. Pets are a terrible idea, and to own one is very selfish and irresponsible. They are a terrible drain on earths resources and provide nothing of value in return.

I would sue if the person is dodging you. Get your $300 back.

Is this person a breeder, or was it a foster? Did they meet you at her home, or somewhere else when you first met the dog?

Sue for $300? It's not worth it.

Im pretty sure you can get a refund if you give the dog back. Thats how it works when you " buy " something.

Was there a contract?
