hi i just applied as3, and i couldnt get it to be perfect like the on in the picture of the as3 site. i couldnt really use a credit card cuz everytime i scraped some silver would show up under the grease, and now when its all done i pop hs back in and check temps, and they havent really gone down at all. before i was using a thermal pad, so i am pretty sure tere should be a much bigger difference than *at most 1-2 deg c*. advice would be great, thanks

If I can be honest with you.... your temp difference expectation is not unlikely. You won't see more than one or two degrees solely by putting some AS3 on it - your main problem will be with your cooling system in your PC - you need good airflow or else even the miracle worker of thermal grease won't work!

That's why AS3 and all thermal goo are overrated. Margarine works just as well and everyone has some in their kitchen fridge.

thanks for the info, but my expecations weren't very high, but i was expecting about 3-4 degree difference, since i was using a thermal pad (supposedly the worst thermal interface whatever?) and yeah i didn't apply the as3 too evenly and what not, so i was assuming i might have done something wrong, but if i should only expect 1-2 degree difference no matter what thermal compound i was using before, then i'm fine with it, a little dissapointed but not much. =) thanks again

oh btw i said 1-2 degrees at most, but basically it stayed the same, with some random jumps one degrees lower, so its not even really at 1 degrees, cuz its not stable, and i'm not sure if the comp hit 38 degrees (from aida32) before since i don't check that often.

To apply the as3 evenly, place a very small dot of compound on the die. Get a sandwich baggie, turn it inside out, and stick your index finger inside so it is tight against the plastic. Then carefully smear the dot evenly across the die. If you get too much compound on there, just dab the die evenly with a clean section of the bag (again with your finger) until you have the right amount. I find this method much more precise, and a lot less messy that using a credit card or razor blade.

You may not see a big temp drop from your thermal pad, I'd say 3-4C max.

sodcha0s = the man. This is how I apply grease and it works great every time. I saw a big drop in temps when I went from expired (yes, it expires, apparently) AS2 to Ceramique. Overall, temperatures dropped 6-8C.
