Fortron or Sparkle FSP530-60GNA, best bang for buck. Rails are dead-on and even has adjustable pots. Very silent too.

Well, I ended up going with an Enermax 460W whisper II. It has +12v@33A if I'm remembering correctly...

Oh yeah, about those CPU temps. I throttled back the o/c to 260 mhz fsb so the CPU is running a little above 2.3ghz. I'm going to bump it back up when my power supply arrives tomorrow.

Anyway, at 2.3 ghz it never went above 42 C. This was while running 3dmark03. I'll start another thread once I get my PSU and am planning to include max CPU o/c, max FSB o/c, and max memory o/c.

Thanks for everyones help and advice!

Once you get the new PSU installed, try 1.52 Vcore and 2.8 Vdimm. That's what was needed in the AT review for stability at 9x290. Good luck!

Here's my new System...

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939
MSI neo2 platinum (nforce3 ultra) mobo
2x512 ocz platinum rev 2
(noticing a pattern yet?)
Thermaltake silentcool k8 cooler (same one from anand article)
seagate 160gb sata 7200 rpm drive.

I was able to get close to Anand's settings running stable...

3000+ running @2520 mhz
280 mhz FSB
2.5 4 4 10 1T memory timings
CPU voltage running at 1.472
memory voltage at 1.75

I tried taking the voltages and FSB higher and while it would run and I could get through 3dmark03 ok, it wasn't stable.

I am running an Antec 300w (from the old computer) power supply with a 6800 vanilla... maybe this is why I can't hit Anand's numbers? Either way it's much faster than my old 2000+ thoroughbred that I could only get an 8% overclock out of!! =) So I'm pretty happy. Thoughts anyone? Did I make a huge blunder with this purchase?

Thanks!

Please help!

I've got almost the exact same setup and I can't get my FSB past 209 without the system not posting. This is my first time doing an overclock so I might be missing something but any help from anyone would be appreciated.

Here's my specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939
MSI neo2 platinum (nforce3 ultra) mobo (bios rev. 1.3)
2x512 ocz platinum rev 2
Thermaltake silentcool k8 cooler (same one from anand article)
2 x Seagate 200gb sata 7200 rpm drives in RAID 0.
OCZ PowerStream 520

Here's as far as I can get with my skills (I hope that's the limiting factor here)

3000+ running @1881 mhz
9x209 mhz FSB
2.5 4 4 10 1T memory timings
CPU voltage running at 1.376
memory voltage at 1.75

lol.. i had the same problem. You need to set your HT Frequency under cell in the bios to 3x or 4x (if your running the newest bios).

The reason this is broken is...

HyperTransport can't get much higher than 1gz and the way it's caclulated is..

FSB x HT = HyperTransport

so

209 x 5 = 1045

So you know that 1045 is the highest HT you can have (same as mine, weird).

Keep that equation in mind when setting HT Freq. I set mine to 3 so i could get max o/c.

It's funny you mention that.. I tried changing that (right now its set at 5x) and when I select it from within the bios, a box pops up (which normally is populated with values) but there are no values to choose from and then it freezes (not responsive to the escape key), so I have to do a ctrl-alt-del to soft-reset.

I'll go check it out again and return with a follow up post.

Thank you for your response that explains alot I did not know that fsbxht multiplier=ht freq.

Now there is at least hope and light!

LOL again. I had that problem too. Just go into the bios and restore it to failsafe defaults, save &exit , then HT freq won't lock your computer up anymore..

dang buggy bios!

Dude you are a god. Thank you so much!

Obviously you have done your research, could you tell me where you found that tid bit of information (restore failsafe defaults)?

Thanks again... noob overclocking results on the way (I hope).

Hey, you're welcome. Glad to help!

As far as HT calc goes, go to the page below and do a search for HT freq.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/.../news_page.php?UID=337

The resetting i just messed with it till I got it to work. Just an FYI, if you do a jumper level restore to the bios, you'll have to do this reset again.

Once you get your max o/c will you post it up here? I'm curious to see how close our chips are once I get my PSU.

Here's an overclocking newb question for you, the 90nm architecture would lend itself better to overclocking that its 130nm predesessor correct?

Yummy, That's one I have..run 4 HD's, 2 DVD's, and a bunch of wildly overclcoked stuff, a water pump, 3x120mm fans....lots of other stuff..
the 350 would have been fine though.

Cool thanks for the link.

You bet, I'll post the results as soon as I can... Right now I'm doing a re-install (removing my raid configuration), so we'll have just about the same system specs once that is finished. I actually posted with Anatechs settings but my raid controller didn't like that and corrupted my partitions so I'm going to disable it and try with just a single drive configuration (like anatechs). I'll keep ya'll updated...

The message of shame:

Well here's where I'm at now...

ht=4x
fsb=230
htFrq=920Mhz

cpu mult=9x
cpuFrq=2070Mhz

If I bump up the fsb to 231 or above after post (when windows is supposed to start loading)
my hard drive hangs with the light activity led on... To make matters worse even at this setting the system is prime95 stable for a whole 10 minutes.

Anyone have any suggestions? Please keep in mind that I'm a greeny and what you might think as obvious I'd really have no idea about so anything that comes to mind will probably help.

Thanks!

Memory may have reached its limit. If you set the memory speed to 166MHz (don't know how this particular BIOS does it), the CPU speed will be divided by 11 (instead of 9) to get the memory speed. Does this motherboard have only 4 memory speed settings? There are actually 4 more in addtion to 100, 133, 166, and 200 but they are RESERVED. In that case you could set the divider to 10 as well. I think the A64 tweaker tool may be able to use these RESERVED settings. Does anyone have an explanation why these settings arent' availaible in the BIOS on ALL motherboards? It seems that it would be as simple as programming a configuration register value on the CPU, no additional hardware support required.

Might also be your SATA drives/controller holding you back. I know at least on my MB you need to use ports 3+4 if you want to OC. Try using the other two SATA ports and see what happens..

thomas-

The DRAM timings I have to select from are AUTO,100,133,166,200. I'll check out the a64 tweaker tool. Thanks for the advice.

acivick-

I'll move my SATA drives to ports 3 and 4 and let you know how it goes. Now that you mention it I remember reading that somewhere.

Just as a side note, I ran memtest with my oc'd memory timings and all went well... I sure hope it's the hard drives holding me back. Thanks all.

To be continued.

There's definitely something fishy with your config. Until I get my PSU tomorrow I am running at 20 FSB and prime95 has been runnning the CPU at 100% for the past 30 mins (still goiing). I hope it's just the SATA issue.

Oh yeah, for those interested in temps, under prime95 the temp is hovering between 52 and 54 C. Is that a good thing? I don't know much about what max temps I should hit my CPU with.

I am just ITCHING to get my PSU tomorrow and see what it can really do!

Sweet!! at last!

Switching the SATA to ports 3 and 4 fixed everything. I've been running prime95 100% for the last hour.

Everything is the same except I'm running at 260 on the fsb. I'm in a hurry so I'll be posting later with all the details. Thanks everyone for your help thus far.

Okay the saga continues....

9x270=2430 Mhz
ht mult=3 (conservative)
cpu voltage runs at 1.54 (pry too high)
mem at 2.6v in the bios

mem timings
2.5 4 4 10 1t

I fail prime95 in about 30 minutes.
I ran memtest for 2 hours straight with current settings, no errors.

So if my memory is okay, I'm assuming prime95 is failing due to my processor. I may have hit the limit, and hey a 600mhz overclock is not bad I dont think . Anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to get this thing prime95 stable at or near my current clock?

oh btw, temps are 38-40 idle and 52 under load.

questions, comments are suggestions are welcome... If you have something you want me to try let me know!

*Update*

Okay it seems I bumped my voltage before I ran off to a meeting and didn't remember when I was writing the previous post. I've been running prime95 now for about an hour with no errors using the below settings. It's looking good... I'm going to let it run a little more and then tweek the htt a bit more and I might call it good at that point.

9x270=2430 Mhz
ht mult=3x (conservative)
cpu voltage runs at 1.54 (pry too high)
mem at 2.6v in the bios

mem timings
2.5 4 4 10 1t

Oh lo and behold just as I was writing this prime95 dumped with an error 1hr and 3 minutes into execution...

Time to start the tweaking...

Just wondering, but how long is prime95 supposed to run? I mean what normal application will run your processor at 100% for an hour?
