Not sure what qualifies as a "nice" neighborhood.

https://spotcrime.com/ca/orange+county

Lol my cousin used to rent a townhouse in the same neighborhood as that listing. Not sure but might even be the same one

It's all really by certain areas than city. Deep Santa Ana and west Anaheim sucks. East Anaheim and Santa Ana / Costa Mesa is good. Westminster and garden Grove are heavily working class Asian. Irvine is nice but cookie cutter and expensive.

Mom isn't letting me step in until she blesses it on Monday and move in until Thursday cause apparently that's my "lucky" day. Darn asians and our weird customs.

Will take pics after lol.

Hey man, my friends moved into a place & didn't kick the ghost out first. Had to evict it later. Wasn't fun. Wish I was kidding.

Stay weird, Bay City.

Just for perspective. I just bought a 40 acre farm: 1000ft2 house, 40x100 pole barn, 24x40 garage, plus extra outbuildings for only $115,000.
Wow, and I thought I was in BFE. Wife and I just bought a 1100ft2 house on 2 acres with 23 ft2 garage, 38x60 pole barn and a 12 ft shed for 168k. I am in central Ohio, an hour from Columbus.

I paid $1.50 for my cardboard box under the overpass. I sold it to some chump for $10. I used that to put gas in my old used van, which I park down by the river at night.

There is no need for the shock and awe on the price vs sq footage debate. We all know the biggest driving factor in determining real estate price by far is location, not the size of the property.

Location determines how long your commute will be (which is tied to the kind of job that are available locally that you can reasonably travel to), safety of neighborhood when you decide to go for a walk, quality of your neighbors (therefore local community), quality of your kid's education, amount of time you save doing everyday things like shopping, running errands, even how fresh your air can be, etc, your general quality of life is going to be determined by the location of your primary residence. This attribute is much, much more important than how much shit you can store in a house, and the price (determined by the market demand) absolutely reflects this, placing it as the most important attribute in purchasing a home, way ahead of the 2nd most important attribute, which is size.

Cliff notes: people places location absolutely above every other factor when purchasing a home, and this is reflected by the free market pricing.

I'm a month away from buying a 3rd home in my name. It gets easier each time.

Congrats. I've had a house for awhile. The main downside is you dont truly own it... but it does have more room.

HOA = home owners association. It's not something you want to live in but may be hard to avoid in some areas. HOAs basically dictate what you can't and can do on your own property/house and tend to be very strict, much more strict than municipal bylaws, which themselves can be BS sometimes (ex: some cities in the states don't allow you to collect rain water). Some HOAs don't allow you to have a garden, or a flag, or will dictate that if you do have a flag it has to be a very specific size. Anything you paint has to be a specific color etc. Most don't allow solar panels or wind turbines because "it's ugly". Basically it's to keep things very cookie cutter. The idea behind them is that if someone has something that's ugly or does not match with rest of houses it could lower the property value of other houses.

I have no problems with home ownership and wouldn't mind it myself, but ya, some people forget what happens if they stop paying property taxes. And you can't start a uranium upgrading facility on your land because of dumb whiny neighbors. And expropriation / eminent domain.

Yeah I hate the fact that you don't truly own your land. To me this should be a human right, you should be able to fully own a piece of land, and it should be 100% yours, as long as you pay your taxes on it. Most of the time you don't even have mineral rights to the land you own, so say you're digging up around your basement and find gold, you don't get to keep it, the mine in the area gets it. Every now and then I do see land sales that include mineral rights though. But there's still restrictions on what you can build or do on it. Generally smaller cities further out are less picky about that stuff. Where I am it's gotten bad. People arn't even allowed to put up a temporary car shelter anymore without some special permit.

^I think where I am, you need a permit to install a front yard parking pad (i.e. short driveway) and then pay an annual fee... Been a while since I checked.

I've lived in several different HOA properties and none have been that bad. Just gotta read the bylaws, they seem long at first but they're really not that bad to get through. As long as you don't disagree with any of it you're good to go.

That's more than enough square footage for a couple and a kid. And they get to be close to a vibrant city instead of stuck suffering out in the boonies

Just depends on perspective. For me and my lifestyle, dealing with all that noise, traffic and people leads to far more suffering than being out in a quiet suburb. Different strokes for different folks

Pro tip: Park your van in really nice neighborhoods. When the property owners ask you to move it, offer to leave in exchange for gas money. Move to another really nice neighborhood.

That's from Shameless, good tactic. Instead for them it was a stripper van.

Side note, just bought a new house too and I was unaware that blinds don't come with the house. Ugh! So much shit to buy when moving in.

Wow, really, no blinds? I got a couple of Lowes gift cards as housewarming presents when I bought my house and they're definitely useful. There are so many little things you don't expect or think about.

Congrats on the house. I wish I could buy again, but that would require job stability which I don't think I'll ever have.

condo might be "home", but "house" it is not

what does HOA stands for...

Homeowners Association - to which as a condo owner you pay your fees to for a variety of things

Did the house have blinds before you bought it? If so they should have come with the house as they are understood to be fixtures - unless specified in the Exclusions portion of the contract. At least in NJ that is.
