If you use it then it is not a waste of money.

Rule of thumb.

1:1.5 new white rice to water.
1:1.75-2 old white rice to water.
1:2-2.5 brown rice to water.

Bad rice cooker!
I had one similar design but it was a National (Panasonic) brand that function perfectly except for the keep warm function isn't as good as more sophisticated models. My experience the cheaper/simpler models do not have keep warm mode or one that harden/yellowed/slightly burn the rice in the bottom of the steamer.

I'm not a big fan of rice, but if I was going to buy a dedicated rice cooker, I'd spend quite a bit more and buy a MUCH better model.

If you'd like to keep the rice around for more than a day, then investing in a better model would have been a good idea. Cheaper models typically dry out / burn the rice within a day.

I have nearly the same thing made by a Crock Pot. Its was $12 at target.

It makes rice. Not the best rice, but it does work. Like iGas said, the keep warm function will dry/crisp the rice on the bottom and edges. I typically try to get it out of the cooker as soon as it done. But 15-30 minutes won't kill you.

If you're that fucking broke, you could have bought a cheap-ass pot at Goodwill for $3.00 that would accomplish the same thing...

Rice cookers such as the one you paid $20 for aren't really any better than a pot on the stove.
But WTF, if it makes you happy...

It's not much of an investment, that thing isn't going to make very good rice and probably is not going to last long. I'm a broke ass college student too, but what I do is research what I am buying and save up my money to get something that is on the mid-level at least. That way, I don't have to buy something more than once. Believe me, cheap shit really doesn't last too long and it's always nice to have nice things.

I've been making rice in mine for 2 years. Not the best, but it works. And for the price, you can't beat it.

Plain white rice doesnt taste good at all, you need something else to go with the rice !!
Try making it fried rice or look up the recipe of dal in some indian cookery site. I don't know anything about making the rice sticky .. may be some jam would do the trick.

Those models usually aren't that great. I suggest you get this one at walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...ct_id=10730254

It's 3 dollars more, but I think this style of rice cooker is better suited for people who cook rice alot.

If you want sticky rice, I suggest you get a bag of Extra Fancy Kokuho Rice ... it's generally cheaper than Botan or Nishiki and very good.

http://www.asiamex.com/proddetail.c...N=683248&ItemID=469&CategoryID=26&SubCatID=36

You might be able to find a small 5 pound bag of this at the local supermarket, but it's cheaper to get the 20 pound bag...usually in a chinese supermarket.

Hope that helps.

:thumbsup; this is the kind that we get at the chinese supermarket. Pretty good rice, although I don't know if I can call it "really good" because I used to eat it every day... I think I prefer jasmine rice.

I have one of those. There are several brands all basically releasing what could very well be the exact same cooker. They are probably not but they may as well be.

Bottom line: it makes rice. If you are like me and you suck at making rice then this is a godsend. If you can make rice in a pot and you do a pretty good job then you may be a bit disappointed because the rice it produces is not very good. Its OK rice. Its still way better than the garbage rice I make in the pot so I am happy with it.
