I just ordered an OEM X2 3800 939 from Newegg to replace my 3500. Has anyone else got one recently and if so, what kind of steppings/overclocks are you getting. I'd like to get at least 2500 mhz. Thanks.

Can't say I know much about X2s, but I know people who've recently bought Opty 165s have gotten (relatively) spectacular overclocks, hitting over 3ghz. I'd hope that X2s would be fairly similar, but one can never know for sure.

If you had some PC4000 DDR laying around that would be easy. Most peeps are reporting 2.4 - 2.6ghz O/C's at minimum voltages (<1.4v)

Get ready to smile I did the same thing a few months ago for a cool $100, and have been very happy since. Overclocking has been ok, but not spectacular for me (2.33 was stupid easy, but 2.5 bluescreened Windows... but I don't change vCore ). The Opty 165 is the way to go for that route

I saw a 90% performance boost in video encoding at stock speeds (using the MeGUI benchmark available at Doom9's forums).

Supreme Commander became playable, though it's still held back very much by my 1GB of RAM and 7800gt.

Photoshop and Premiere became noticeably faster.

Dual Core FTW!

If you can't get 2.5gHz you got a problem somewhere, I got 2.6 @ 1.4v. I can get 2.7 but then I need to up the voltage to 1.5. And remember there's people out there getting 2.8 and more (but usually with more than stock cooling)

I can do 2.6ghz easy with stock vcore, using arctic cooler 64 pro. It can probably do 2.7ghz, but I'd need to give to much juice to my ram, which I don't want to do. For daily usage it's at 2.5ghz.

I was about to create a new thread but since the OP is doing what I'm thinking of doing, I'm just going to post here with some question.

I built my 3500+ system with a 7600gt and 2 gig of ram a year and a half ago. I'm thinking of buy either a X2 4200 or Opteron 165. Hopefully with this it'll last another year until the middle of the next generation of CPU and Dx10 card, then I'll build a new system.

Will Supreme Commander be playable with this setup? I played the Supreme Commander beta and even with minimal graphic it was very choppy. I read that it's very CPU intensive. Will there be a lot of improvement with gave like Civ 4 with a dual core? and which option would be better X2 4200+ Toledo or Opteron 165 Denmark?

Thanks

Awesome, I can't wait to get it. I do happen to have pc4000 ram and a Lanparty Ultra-D motherboard, so I hope to do pretty well.

Supreme Commander brought my single core to it's knees. I can't play with any more than three easy enemies or one challenge enemy at once. And I have to keep the map size as small as possible.

You should be able to hit 2.5 easily. I bought one from Newegg about a week ago, and I've got it running stable at 2.77ghz with 1.325v. Gets pretty hot though, 41°C idle, near 60° under heavy load.

As for SupCom, switching to dual-core didn't seem to raise my max framerate by a whole lot (I've got a 7800gtx so it's probably still gpu limited), but when there's a lot of action on screen, it seems quite a bit smoother than it did on my previous 3000+ (at 2.52ghz.)

For $80, it was definitely worth it.

I bought a X2 3800+ and I have it at running at 2600mhz and it is at stock volts. I dont know if I got lucky with a good CPU or not..I just know it has been rock solid now for over a year and I am very happy with it~

I think it will be playable. I'm running a 3700+ san diego at stock speed, 2GB DDR400, and a 7800GT at stock speed. Supreme commander runs very smooth with with moderate graphics. Worst case, you can buy a $200 7950GT or something similar to hold you over.

Alright, I've got it installed and everything seems to be working fine. It's an LCBQE 0718. Has anyone had experience with this stepping?

Set it at 10 X 250, and 333 on your ram and see what happens. Mine hits 2700 easily with a slight bump in voltage and will stay under 60C under load with an Arctic Cooling 64.

It's running fine at 240 x 10 right now. I'll try to push it a little more later today. I know my ram can run at DDR 500, so I'm not concerned with it, yet.
