I've heard exactly what you said at least 50 times. Then all 50 of them changed their tune when they had kids and were forced to be an adult for once. All 50 of them are also still living their lives, spending time with friends, driving nice cars, playing with toys, enjoying rewarding careers, travelling and whatnot. Now they just have some kids.

You're going to end up having kids. You left it open with one of your last statements there. No true conviction is shown and you will cave so quickly to a woman who wants them. Growing up is tough isn't it?

You're right - I mean its certainly not like there is a statistical upwards in trend in people not having kids and we all know that your 50 experiences are a perfect sampling cross section and is therefore 100% guaranteed to apply to the OP because of your perceived impressions of him

For those who do not want kids, what will you do if unplanned pregnancies happens? So do not say with certainty that you will not have kid in your life. it is unpredictable in some way

Unplanned pregnancy =/ having the child

Last time I checked abortion is still legal.

For all your blowhard "paragon of virtue" unselfish "becoming adult" parents out there, how come you haven't adopted? You'll get to be even more unselfish, almost heroic, by shaping an unwanted child's life, by rescuing him/her from the gutter.

*crickets*

Yeah, some act of "unselfishness" "being adult". You just had one because that's what's been ingrained into us, and evolution takes care of the child liking part and all the warm and fuzzy you get from bringing up a child, even the "sacrifice". It's the same behavior that drives someone to fuck in the first place. Don't try to justify it by some sort of appeal to a higher moral authority.

Hmm. I don't have kids, but I do hope to have some one day. My main reason is that I think they'll make me happier. It's purely selfish on my part. I also would prefer them to be carrying my genes, also purely for selfish reasons.

I doubt that many parents think they're "paragons of virtue" just because they did what untold billions of other humans did since the beginning of the species. I do think a lot of them really did find happiness in being parents though. I don't really see the point in specifying that liking the child is instinctual behavior as though that detracts from it's worth. It still makes you happy. Why not use nature to your ultimate benefit?

Well, that's kind of a leap you made from the first to second paragraph. It's nice if you can "dump the kids off at the grandparents." But, lessee, my sister lives in the Southwest and our parents live in Chicago. A couple that my gf and I are friends with have parents--in Korea. etc etc I could go on...

So, kudos to your friends for being local with the grandfolks...some of us actually move away from home when we grow up.

edit-plus, you know, not all people are great candidates for grandparent status, just like with parents. I won't go into detail here, but my mother's issues have already generally cut her out from her grandchildrens' lives...

I was with you and agreed with you until you made this smart ass remark. What an ass.

My post is not for parents in general... just the ones in this thread that are too full of themselves and somehow consider having kids necessary to "grow up" or to be "selfless".

They're no more selfless than they were before... just that evolution is driving them to think about someone else for a change.

there are pros and cons to both. much of it is about attitude. if you want it to suck, it will suck. if you want it to be the best thing ever, it will be.

i see similarities to single vs relationship. and lots of times you cant fully appreciate one until you do the other. children are a long play.

many many years of hard work, stress and money. don't delude yourself into thinking parents are universally and constantly miserable and that there is no payoff though.
