My apartment has central air, but I haven't turned it on yet. Fortunately, I was out and about today for a meeting, so didn't have to be home. But also, I've found in this type of weather, keeping the windows closed or minimally open, and the shades drawn slows the heating of my place. And when the sun sets, I can pop a window fan in to bring in cool air from the outside.

Of course, there will come a point where I throw the AC on - usually just setting it to 76 during the day to keep the humidity down.
My place isn’t insulated, it’s cold in winter, hot in summer. We live right on a major road in Revere so exhaust from cars is an issue. Add in my lung cancer, COPD & long covid & the heat is a big problem for me. Grateful to have our window AC going, breathing is a lot easier.

I'm kinda the same way, I need a cool environment. Showing a fever of 99.9 right now, with a wet washcloth over my head.

I'm double-Vaxxed, along with natural immunity. I think that this is an infection in my brain more than COVID, but time will tell.

@Fanatical Meat already got most of my stuff.

edit: feeling a bit better today.

Have you looked at the MassSave program? If you own, they have support for insulation installation. And if you rent, you could potentially see if your landlord would take the project on (since they can collect the incentives).

They also offer rebates on things like air filters (you can get instant rebates through their store, but you can apply for the rebate by purchasing pretty much any other EnergyStar rated qualifying device somewhere else, if you want to stack sales).

Wish I could do that in San Antonio. Our dewpoint has been in the mid 70s all day and will probably raise up into the upper 70s overnight, just makes you feel sticky when you go outside.

Yeah, it doesn't work at all times of the year. At some points, the Boston region starts to feel like a swamp. But for these early heat waves, it sort of works for me.

Early summer is always ridiculously humid in SA unless we got no rain in the spring (like 2022), then by July when all the plants are dead and the grass is brown from the heat and lack of rain it becomes more a dry heat in the day (dewpoints in the 50s to low 60s) with heat domes killing all the wind, but still mid 70s dewpoints at night thanks to having a strong wind from the Gulf of Mexico every night.

Ugh nothing worse than getting sick in the summer. Had congestion so bad a couple years ago in July I completely lost my sense of smell as thought it was COVID, but tested negative twice on PCR. Still no idea what I had. But congestion + heat + humidity makes it nearly impossible to sleep. Luckily in my area the really bad allergen (mountain cedar) comes in winter so I'm rarely congested like that in summer.

My landlord isn’t going to do anything like that, lol, it won’t be happening 😂

When I lived in a Somerville triple-decker a few years ago, I brought it up with my landlord: He stupidly thought the whole thing was some sort of backdoor attempt to push rent control, and not just an energy saving program run by the state that could give him access to cheap capital improvements.

Our furnace went out… the HVAC guy that came out to inspect my furnace ( at my cost, yearly) said the furnace was replaced with one from like 1996… so I guess you know what I’m working with here. Still glad to have a place where I can keep my cat. Bracing for our annual rent increase.

10 years from now this will be considered mild.
Maybe not 10 years but I bet 25 years from now it will. For example we had a record setting summer 26 years ago in the San Antonio area that crushed 50 year old heat records but now that's become what a typical summer looks like in the area for the last 10 years or so with the last two summers crushing that one and this one looking like it'll be as ugly as the last two. Hopefully not worse at least.

Cooler today. 13C with tons of wind and suppose to go down to like 5. That wind is crazy though, sounds like a freight train any time the bursts hit. Seems to be affecting a part of Quebec too since they have lot of power outages. Been making tickets all day at work. I'm not even dialing in to check battery voltages, just ticketing everything because there's so many of them. The techs can decide what to do lol.

I've managed to avoid using AC so far. I try to wait until at least June 1st.

Upper 80s to 91 or so is too warm for May. Most nights have been in the 60s with many in the 50s.

I do the window thing. Open everything possible at night to let as much cool(er) air in as I can, then close up in the morning to keep it in. Shades everywhere to keep the Sun out.

Surprisingly only got to 94 today when 97 was forecast. Think maybe the weather models aren't properly taking into account the horrific pollution from Mexican agricultural fires. It's so nasty the moon looked red like a brighter version of a lunar eclipse last night. Hopefully that smoke keeps us below 100 this weekend. Still ungodly levels of humidity which we're stuck with until all the plants die and the grass goes brown. Any time we're in the 90s and the grass is still green the outdoors will be like trying to breathe water.

Ugh forecasting 112F heat index today, which probably means like 117F in my neighborhood thanks to the heat island effect if 112F is the airport heat index. So much fun running the AC 20 hours a day in freaking May.

Holy crap that comes up to 44C I don't know how people handle that. The hottest I've ever seen was 39 when I was in the GTA once and there was a heat wave and it was brutal.

39C is actually the record for my city, in 1936. I find anything after 25 starts to get a bit unbearable. 30 is where I pretty much avoid doing anything physical. The constant sweating and stickiness is what makes it so bad.

Even in crazy hot last year this was more a mid to late June kind of thing, ugh and it's only 2PM so 3+ more hours of heating to come.

Ugh last year we had a day with a 125F = 51.7C heat index. That was probably the nastiest day of last year. Though 2022 was horrible too because we'd have a bunch of days in July that were 102F by 11AM and the temp wouldn't drop below 100F until 10PM.
