My wife's Maxima is in the shop getting the driver's side door repaired so she got this from Enterprise for a few days.

I was curious how the car drove so I took it for a spin tonight.

The steering is better than some of the horrible GM cars I've driven recently and the brakes were also much better than I expected. The car was predictable and I didn't really notice any torque steer even though it's FWD but then it isn't all that powerful either.

I wasn't too keen on the CVT though. I was always waiting for it to shift and it just feels like there is a point where it should shift but the revs just go down along with responsiveness. It just feels mushy and slow to respond to throttle inputs.

Interior was cavernous and the layout was fairly easy to get used to. The seats are comfortable but offer no lateral support whatsoever. There was a rattle coming from the rear passenger side but that may have been some of the junk my wife transfered from the Maxima rattling around. Also, there was an annoying whine from the dash whenever you turn the steering wheel. It was very faint but noticeable when the radio was off (this might be attributed to the typical rental car beatings though). The radio was typical Ford rental car fare. It plays tunes and that's about it. Oh, the turn signals were really quite annoying as they make a ding ding sound that would eventually drive me nuts. They get 2 thumbs way down.

Outward visibility is good and the car has very large mirrors, probably the largest I've ever seen on a car. The trunk is huge also. You could probably fit 7 or 8 bodies in there with little trouble.

Overall I was pleased with it. It would be a great car for a road trip but I prefer something a little more sporty for everyday driving. Lose the annoying turn signals, put in some better bolstered seats and get rid of the CVT. Oh, and more power would be nice.

Hehe, the seats are the one thing that annoy me about american made cars... the taurus' seats were the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in.

Considering the 300 is a land yacht and the Five Hundred is not...... It depends on what you're looking for.

i think the Ford 500 is a great alternative for all those people buying 4 cylinder accords / camry's. it's not that much more money and WAY more car.

the high end camry's and accords are obviously out of the 500's class.

ford needs to offer a higher end engine to compete with that class.

the cvt is interesting but not a great idea.

i test drove one about a year ago but wasn't ready to replace my olds intrigue with it.

If by "nice car" you mean "looks like it was assembled as a class project by a group of third graders using leftover parts from the assembly line floor" then I agree with you.

I had the misfortune of getting one of these as a rental a couple of weeks ago and I was shocked at how poorly the interior was put together. The fit and finish was terrible and nothing appeared to have been designed to flow together. It also has the usual front wheel drive torque steer, more body roll than Rosie O'Donnell on a surfboard, and an engine that felt like a turbocharged weed-whacker.

Other than that, it was a nice car.

Actually, I'd say they are very similar in size. I rented a Chrysler 300 in Maui a couple years ago.

I'm driving a 93 taurus (poor college kid ) and I don't really find the seats uncomfortable - yes there are more comfortable ones out there but it isn't bad at all.

I completely disagree. You can get a pretty good idea about a car by renting one. I worked in the car rental industry for a few years and developed my strong bias against American cars as a result of this experience (certainly against GM cars anyway...they were the worst of the lot).

You absolutely can and should judge a car by how well they stand up to the beatings they get as a rental.

Oh, and I would NEVER EVER buy a previous rental. Not as long as I live will I ever consider buying one.

The 3.5l 250hp + engine will be coming.

I rented one about 2 weeks ago... my problem with it was the center of gravity was so high it cornered like an SUV with mucho body roll.

Decent power, very roomy, and reasonable interior.

that might be my next car then. the ford 500 with that engine in it would be pretty sweet.

i really really want the Pontiac GTO. i love the car but there may not be any available when i'm ready to buy.

They need to update the freaking engine. The one in there right now (The one that was in the Taurus) is almost 20 years old, and needs to be CHANGED.

The 3.0l Duratec is a pretty new engine, too lazy to look up the exact date. You're probably thinking of the really old 3.0l vulcan which wasn't the most powerfull thing in the world but was extremely reliable.

It's supposed to be that way to appeal to people who like the high seating position of an SUV. They call it Command Seating.
