Just drove Ford Mustang Ecoboost - NICE!

I got a rental Ford Mustang. NICE acceleration. Figured it was the base V6 model, but the pickup in this thing is NICE. Popped the hood and on the engine cover it says "Ecoboost". So I assume this is the turbo V-4, correct? I've always liked V-8s, but I got to tell you, when the boost in this thing comes on, its an awesome feeling. Anyone have one? Thoughts? I also read an article in a car magazine and the Camaro 4-banger beet it in acceleration, despite (I think) having a smaller displacement. So I imagine that one might even be funner. Anyone have one of these? Thoughts on one versus the other? How much can either of these to be modded to (HP wise of course) with minor tuning that does not void the warranty?

Thanks!

Moved from OT.

Pretty sure ecoboost is just fancy talk for "disabling a few cylinders when you aren't flooring it".

You sure about that bro? I feel you might be focusing too much on the "eco" part and not enough on the "boost" part... could be wrong...

Well, seeing as we're on the internet and all, I decided to just google it. Turns out the secret to ecoboost stew is direct fuel injection (no intake tract) and a turbocharger. They tweaked the fuel injection system and put a turbocharger in it, then put a fancy sticker on top, that's it.

Does anyone make a V-4?
I think 4-bangers are usually an I-4.

I see you can get a Mustang with a 2.3l turbo I-4

Ford had a few different V4 engines back in the sixties and seventies.

Several months ago, a colleague during business travel was given a Mustang for a rental (probably to make up for the Elantra he was assigned several months before ). I noted it didn't have the "5.0" badge on the side, so I assumed it was the V-6 version. He was adamant he heard a blower underneath, but none of us were aware there was a turbo I-4 in the lineup. When we popped the hood when heading out for lunch, we all just shook our heads - a four banger in a 'Stang. Not knocking it, but it was definitely a paradigm shift for a lot of us.

It drove pretty well (I was a passenger), and seemed to have as much (if not more) potency than the V-6's I rode in the past.

Just a sign of the times - muscle cars getting four cylinder engines. Same with Porsche. Tesla P90D's doing sub 3.0 sec 0-60's. Drive for lower displacement, less emissions, adding electricity... wow. The twelve cylinder supercars may be endangered species sooner rather than later. Better get that Aston Vantage S V12 manual before it's gone!

The I4 turbo on those is pretty snappy and fairly easy to tune. I've seen a handful that have been bumped up in power simply by adjusting the boost pressure.

With that said, they certainly are a helluva lot less fun than the 5.0.

Unless I got a smoking deal on a 2.3EB Mustang, I'd choose the V8 every time even with the fuel economy hit. The 2.3EB is a great fit for the Escape, Fusion, and Focus RS but not the Mustang IMO.

It is a great engine though. I don't think it has responded as well to mods as the 2.0EB in the Focus ST.

Meh. I prefer every other engine option in the mustang over the EcoBoost. Just sounds and feels terrible. If they offered the 3.5EB in the mustang that would probably change my mind......

This is rofl-worthy. I see you actually looked up what EcoBoost is, and it's a bit more than just slapping a turbo on the engine. It's a new engine family with a lot of new technology and patents.

a turbo V-4 would beet any cabbage

Lulz. I see what you did there...

A four banger cant beat a V6.

Simply a lie.

I think in a couple years they should have the base ecoboost (a fine engine, I don't see why you guys are hating on it) and ecoboost v6 (maybe the SHO with 350/350) and then a high end ecoboost v6 (the raptor v6 with 450/510) and then either a big NA v8 or a form of boosted v8.

I realize you lose out a bit oN the dynamics of a NA engine, but for better or for worse turbocharged/supercharged are the way of the future and can make some incredible engines.

V8 every time. The 4 banger and V6 people can enjoy their cars trailing far behind mine muhahahah

There was rumour (I sincerely hope it was a rumour) the the Shelby GT500 was to have an Eco boost V6. Pretty sure sales would be non existent without a blown V8 of some sort.

The other talk is of a twin turbo Coyote pushing around 750hp. However, I have also read they might supercharge the or turbo charge the GT350 motor...that would be very nice.

The GT500 will have to have the highest boosted v6 ever if it isn't v8. I'm betting on a supercharged but cut-down gt350 motor though.

If forced to ignore the V8 models and assuming I'd hold on to the car for 10+ years and will be doing zero modding of the engine.
I'd prefer the V6 with the performance package (with the different gearing) they used to offer on V6 models.

I love the Ecoboost Mustang! Super fun to drive. I've rented the 6-cylinder & it's not as fun...the turbo is great on the 4-cylinder.

I like the new Mustang way more than the Camaro. I fit really well in it (6' tall). Would definitely like to get one...someday!
