Don't feel bad about driving it rough -it can take it. - I did the same with the 'stang when I brought it home last year. I had practiced on a friend's Civic earlier, but I wasn't prepared to handle all that RWD torque. Luckily it was dark and not many on the road at the time...and I waited for the salesman to go back in the building before I left . You'll get the hang of it soon

man when i learned stick shift with my gf's Tercel (back then not wife yet) she always got pissed when I made mistakes and always left after driving as an unhappy couple. I wouldn't want anyone to learn using my STi.

All I know is that the clutch on my old 99 ranger was about 10x harder than the clutch on my 99 viper. I would think that with all that power youd be able to make it go quite easily. With my 4-banger-ranger it was hard to get anything moving .

In my experience, the STI and Evo are easy to drive, even the first time. Now, the first time I drove an R32, I stalled it. When new, the clutch in the R32 grabs like a mofo.

I wasn't allowed to drive the CGT we got in before it was sold, but from what I've heard, the clutch grabs like a bandit. It's a lightweight 6.5" carbon ceramic clutch that will last forever, but is very touchy, because of of it's weight. It's basically either on or off, unless you're revving the sht out of the engine and making it slip. Even in that case, you won't smell it burning at all.

I live across from an elementary school and somebody a few months back was doing just this. They hit the school. Mind you, in order to hit the school they had to jump the curb, sidewalk, and cross 12-15 ft of grass. It took several weeks to repair the wall.

Just be careful with that STi, mooncancook!

My wife's first go at a manual was my '66 GTO. You could just dump the clutch at idle without stalling... which she did a few times.

You don't know how to drive a manual transmission very well, and you went out and bought one of the highest performing cars on the consumer market to learn in?

Wow.

<= never understands why people say WRX/STi clutches are difficult. I've driven 05 and 06 WRX's and i've felt the clutch was easier to manage than my '99 Civic EX. I dunno, maybe my clutch just sucks or something.

Go to a parking lot.

Engage in to 1st gear. Let up the hang brake and let out the clutch so that it engages. Let the car go forwards for a bit. NO GAS. Stop and set it up again. Repeat. After 10-15x then do it again but this time move to 2nd gear after you pick up some speed and use the acc pedal.

The secret to mastering the Subaru clutch and trans (especially the 5MT) is to perfect your rev-matching. The engine is very fluid and eager to rev, so you just adjust the rpm to where it needs to be and let the clutch out quickly.
As to starting off without stalling, you just blip the throttle to 1500 rpm and bring the clutch up quickly and smoothly with a brief pause right at the engagement point.

Wow.

I was thinking this as well...it's either a mid-life crisis thing or someone new to money maybe?

When Chuck Norris was a teenager, he once impregnated every nun in a convent tucked away in the Himalaya mountains. 9 months later, the nuns all gave birth to the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated and untied team in NFL history.
