Well I finally finished it.

I loved it. Story was good...twists and turns...it was great.

Graphics and environments were beautifully done. Yes some textures were low res but you don't notice it too much. Lighting and water were top-notch. Too bad AA couldn't be used in Vista but I didn't notice it too much playing at 1680x1050.

Definitely worth the money.

What does this have to do with Video?

Here are 3 other threads dedicated to graphics in a particular game in the VIDEO forum:
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2093324&enterthread=y
http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2093196&enterthread=y

I made this thread for anyone who had comments about the graphics of Bioshock. There were discussions about low res textures and such before here in the video forum.

Thank-you for the clarification ... OK to proceed ...

I dunno, HDR in Oblivion made things look washed out to me. But maybe that was just because of the outdoor environments. Gothic 3 lighting looked better than Oblivion lighting to me and it was similar environments to Oblivion.

I have no idea what that game is, but ok.

I'm trying to play through Bioshock (making my way over to Fontaine's Fisheries from McDonagh's now), but it just keeps freezing up and crashing. Very annoying.

Using the newest drivers? Which OS?

I like Bioshock's graphics because of the art direction and that everything perfectly fit the environment and atmosphere.

I'm using the Nvidia beta drivers on Windows XP.

I am almost at the end, love the game. It has to be the best FPS i ever played as it is one of the few where i also felt compelled to finished it unlink most FPS games i get bored.

The graphics are pretty damn good. What i think is funny is when i started this game i had no problem playing everything max, but now almost to the end the level are much larger, have many many more object and textures on the screen at one time and i can final tell an actually hit in FPS unlike before, so that sucks but oh well my fault for not getting a 8800 lol.

About the AA thing, well it is a UE3 thing so oh well i guess, it isn't like my system could run it with it on anyway. Also the texture could be higher res but i think they did a pretty good job making it playable and having many "different" textures than have a couple very high-res textures. I do hope they release an SDK for the game as it would be nice to see modder take aim on the game with high-res packs and such for people with really beefy systems.

Also if anyone doesn't know there are console commands you can run in game semi/real-time with some user.ini settings and/or and exec run text file settings. the cult of rapture forums have a couple of threads of the main contributors to these secrets and as close as modding as we get for know.

But overall i give the game a 9.5/10 so far

Like the summary. Is "Linearity" a good or a bad thing?

Depends on how you look at it. Oblivion was so open that many people got totally lost in the game and would not get their quests done before they found a new one. Not everyone likes this particular type of gameplay.

Linearity is a bad thing in my scale here, the higher number the better or less linear the game is. Boils down to replay value. 1 point deduction for not having any SDK or editor out and no word if ever will. Another point deduction for no reason to go back to previous areas. You have a map visit everything while in that map and don't waste time back tracking later for no reason what so ever. Reason for an 8 is because there are many rooms you "don't" have to visit but they mostly reward you with tonics/money/upgrades or more story so this is good. Also there is two ending one for rescuing the LS and one for harvesting them. I'll be making my way though the game again using console commands to have many and all tonics so it makes the game a little different, and easier so less time to see second ending.

I hope this helps rather than degrading your second time around, but you can go into the Bioshock directory and play the second ending scene, or in fact all of the cinematics if you want to know what it is like. Its run on a bink file, so you don't need any programs to run it.
