I just put together a new gaming PC ( specs below ), but it wont post, I have checked all my connectors and everything has power but it wont post, could anyone please give me some suggestions of what to try, especially anyone with the same motherboard (Asus P6-T Deluxe) as I have

this is the only reason I was gonna buy a pre-built system from overpriced alienware or another vendor in the first place because I was afraid something like this was gonna happen if I built it myself

these are my specs

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz

ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Intel Motherboard

Antec Nine Hundred Two Case

XFX Geforce GTX 285

Western Digital 640GB Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822136319

Mushkin 800W Power Supply

I spent all this money and when it didnt post I just wanted to cry, please help my tech friends

Try it with just 2 or 3 Gb of RAM. Problem may be that the RAM voltage isn't set high enough at default to support a full 6Gb of RAM. If that doesn't work then pull everything out of the case then see if you can set it up and get it to post.

thanks so much for reply, used 1 stick of ram when I tried to boot it up for the first time

I will take everything out of the case and try to post outside of the case and report back

try video card in the other slot... also make sure 8 pin motherboard connector is connected and external PCI express power to the graphics card is connected. does your video card give a "green light" when the power is good?

Exactly what happens when you press the power button. Does the fans atleast turn on? Or is it completely turned off?

If nothing happens, make sure the little switch on the back of the power supply is turned on correctly

Otherwise, does it beep? What exactly is no post. Need to know exactly what happens.

thanks for reply,

my motherboard lights were on and GPU fan spinning and CPU fan spinning and Optical Drive was working, everything powered up but it just wont post, installed the cpu I used the retail heatsink that came with the processor, I even took off the heatsink again to make sure the cpu was seated correctly, the thermal paste that came pre-applied to the heatsink was already melted so I assume the processor is alive

I had to press pretty hard to locked down the processor is this normal, you can even see how the clip to lock it down is kinda bent

there are two 6-pin Connectors hooked into the GTX 285,

I'm not sure if my Case has a speaker so I dont know what beeps to look for, all of the following have power GPU, Motherboard, Optical drive, but i'm not sure if my Harddrive is suspect

I also used 1 stick of Ram when I tried

I have the power cable and sata cable for my hard drive and optical drive

the 8 pin cable and the Main 24 pin cables are connected in the mobo

I checked the reset and and power switches also

also I took it out of the case it still didnt power up

I notice when I turn it off with the switch on the back of the power supply which is the only way I could, it makes a pop and spark by the memory slots it did this a couple of times after I took it out of the case

dunno if that is from me turning it off with the PSU switch instead of shutting it down

sorry couldnt resist the poke

i was like ROFL when i saw that
dude take a chill pill u can always get RMA

temme is ur power there errotic like in here(india)
or you dont have earthings ..........
cause i only see some power related problems
always when ur building outside
put the board on insulating surfaces
and if the power is errotic always use a UPS OR A POWER STRIP even if u r doing it outside
i burnt my 8800gt just like that cause i was building outside and dint use a power strip)

it wasnt doing that at first, it if was then I would have known what the problem was, at first I didnt have the 8-pin connector in the mobo, ( only had 4-pin plugged in at first ) and that spark only did that a couple of times and that was after I took it out of the case like everyone suggested

if all else fells i'm just gonna get Raped by Dell and just get a overpriced XPS system

I know this problem has to be something small. i'm just gonna ship all of this stuff back to newegg, and just pay the restocking fee, but hey atleast I tried

the very first time i build a rig(actually it was my father's pc i desmateled it and reassembled it)
i screwed up the board(damn my father was so angry i was like 13 years old hhahaha)
u only learn if u screw up things
dont go in for a assembled pc cause u will only loose confidence

dude, it sounds like you have a defective part.... This could happen to ANY thing... If you seen sparks, I would RMA two things, just incase. The powersupply and the motherboard..

Its most likely the motherboard, but just incase, dont want to get another motherboard and have it be the powersupply and it screw things up again...

They'd probably rape you in cost, sell you useless stuff, and not do a very good job.

Welcome to putting together a PC. Not everything works the way it should. It's not for everyone, and when I put together my rig 3 years ago, it took 3 months to fix cause the DVD drive was busted, and the motherboard's SATA controller was defective. I was in college, and barely had time to deal with this shit, but I did it for better or for worse.

If you want to try to diagnose the problem, do it step by step to eliminate problems. I'm 3 years out of it, but you could try taking everything innecessary out, leaving just the power supply, CPU and Ram in to listen to a beep or something.

That's if you didn't fry anything with the sparks. You did put in the motherboard offsets right?

You sound like someone that should have gone to Ibuypower.com and ordered. I actually took a class in high school where they had us build two computers, one from used parts and one from new parts before I actually spent the cash to build my own comp. If it was really your first time, you should have expected at least one or two mistakes. They happen; we're all human. I suggest you return everything and quit while you still can. You lose a 15% restocking fee, but hey, you lived and you learned.

thanks so much for replies

I ordered everything from newegg would they give me a refund, but my mobo, and cpu and gpu it said they are non-refundable I can just exchange

while this is my first PC build, i'm really not much of a noob I know quite a bit when it comes to computers, since this is my first time building one its just something minor I havent figured out yet, so i'll keep trying until I get it because I know its something small and I will keep getting more suggestions until I get through this

i'm going to RMA the RAM, Mobo and CPU, and start from scratch

everything had power even the mobo so I assume the Power Supply works, all case fans were spinning, the graphics card had the two green lights and the fan was spinning the DVD drive was working all these had power

when I recieve my replacement parts i'm gonna report back here first before I install anything and do it step by step

what are motherboard offsets do you mean the things that go through the wholes in the mobo when you are installing the mobo in the case

little gold things (Typically, some times silver) that stick out from the case where you put the motherboard. They are what you screw the motherboard into....

CPU probably isnt defective. I have actually never seen a defective CPU in all the computers I have built. Maybe with extreme overclocking, but thats not the case. Unless you bent some pins (dont know if core I7 has pins on the motherboard part or the cpu itself), otherwise its probably the motherboard. Ram could be bad now because of the motherboard, so its good to RMA that to...

I would still RMA the powersupply, but thats me. Sparks are bad, and either the motherboard screwed up or the powersupply did... Or you did, but thats a different point.

YES, my case comes with the gold connectors pre-installed, I made sure my mobo was screwed down securely with screws into the gold connectors

also the pins for the i7 are on the mobo and instead of the cpu
