I've been picking up parts for a few months and finally purchased my final products. I'd never do it this way again with what happened to me on RAM prices. I figured it'd be easier on the wallet. But anyway, here's my new rig:

Antec P180
Gigabyte DS3
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
EVGA 8800 GTS 640
Corsair 520HX
Corsair XMS (2X1GB)
WD 500 GB
Asus Lightscribe Burner
Creative X-FI Extreme Gamer

Peripherals:

Sceptre 20.1" X20WG
Logitech S-510
Vista Premium
Logitech X-230

It's after the fact, but how do you guys like this system?

-why such a high end card and a poor monitor? there are much better choices out there that would make your eyes happier
-why ASUS dvd burner? Liteon? Samsung? NEC?
-why spend more money on the sound card than your actual speakers? a better ratio would be 2:1 speakers:sound card.

1. The price was right on the monitor. Also, this is coming from a crappy Dell CRT. But I do admit, if I had the chance to do it again I'd get another monitor.

2. It's only $30, I'm not that picky about my burner specs anyway.

3. I got the speakers for free with gift cards, I'm upgrading those in the next couple months and will use these for my tv. Also, my room is only 12X12 ft, so I don't need extreme power.

All good points though, thanks.

Pretty good rig. There are nothing wrong with Sceptre monitors. My friend got one recently and it looks great. Corsair ram is overrated though and for the same price you probably could have gotten better ram with lower timings. Also the lower end X-Fi series aren't much better than the integrated HD audio that comes on most motherboards these days. Unless you care than much about EAX, you would have been better off sticking with the integrated sound and buying something like the Logitech Z-2300. Too late I guess.

imho it is always bad when you come in and ask what people think of a build after the fact....

I'm not sure what you're trying to imply with that. It's not that I think it's a bad build...I'm just wanting some comments/criticism. It's just like when you were 4 and you showed your mother a picture of a fish you just colored, not that you thought it was bad, you just wanted her to see it and give an opinion.

How much was the monitor? Can you return it without incurring a restocking fee? I'd get a Dell 2007WFP or higher if possible.

I would have gone with a NEC / Optiarc AD7170A DVD burner. Then get Liggy&Dee firmware for it from the CD Freaks forums.

why would people criticize now when they know you have already spent quite a bit of $$ on it? usually it is best to be criticism before you pull the trigger.

but if you really want to know - i would have waited until after the intel price drops, gone with either a 6300/6400 or 4300/4400 and o/ced it and got more performance than the 6600 offers for much less $$$. i also would have gone xp home/pro since vista has shown to be less than the best for gaming and other uses.

The monitor was $240 - $40 MIR. Keep in mind, this was back in January. Also, I did get in on the Intel price drops.

Agreed.. the extra money for a quality monitor is well spent. They use different types of LCD pannels.

Although, if you happen to get one of the scepters that doesn't crap out it could turn out to be ok.

Other than that it looks like a quality build.
